A tumbling drum that spins for 45 minutes and hands back a cold, damp load is one of the most common laundry failures I get called on. A GE dryer not heating almost always comes down to a handful of parts, and most of them cost under $40 and swap out in half an hour with a nut driver and a multimeter.

Before you touch anything, unplug the dryer or shut off its breaker. Electric models run on 240 volts across two legs, and gas models still carry line voltage to the controls. Pull the plug first, every time.

Confirm the Symptom Before You Buy Parts

Cold clothes can mean the heat quit, or it can mean the airflow quit. Run a quick test: start a timed dry cycle and put your hand at the outside vent hood. Strong warm air means the heat works and you have a venting problem. Weak or cold air points at the heating circuit. This one check saves people from ordering a $200 element they never needed.

Also confirm you are not on a no-heat cycle. Air Fluff and some Delicate settings intentionally run the blower with no heat. Switch to Timed Dry on high heat and retest.

The Thermal Fuse: The Number One Culprit

On the vast majority of GE electric dryers, the single most common reason for no heat is a blown thermal fuse. It sits on the blower housing or near the heating element housing and is a one-time safety device: when airflow drops and temperatures spike, it opens permanently and never resets. GE part numbers like WE4M137 and WE4M80 cover most models and run $8 to $18.

Here is the part people miss. The fuse blows because the dryer overheated, and it overheated because the vent was clogged. If you drop in a new fuse and leave a lint-packed duct in place, the new fuse blows too. Clean the entire vent run before replacing a blown thermal fuse. Pull the transition hose, run a brush through the wall duct, and clear the outside hood.

To test the fuse, unplug the dryer, access it from the back panel, pull the two wires, and check continuity with a multimeter. A good fuse reads near zero ohms. An open reading (OL or infinite) means replace it. Never jumper across a fuse to “test” it running; you are defeating a fire-safety device.

Heating Element (Electric Models)

If the fuse is good and you still have no heat, the heating element is the next stop on an electric GE. The element is a coiled nichrome wire inside a metal can, usually mounted on the back of the drum housing. Over years of heat cycling the coil sags and eventually breaks. GE elements such as WE11M23 or WE11X10005 run $30 to $70.

Test it with a multimeter across the two terminals. A healthy element reads roughly 10 to 20 ohms. An open reading means the coil is broken and the whole element gets replaced, not repaired. While you have it out, inspect the coil for spots where it is arcing against the metal housing, which will trip fuses even with the coil intact.

Thermostats and the High-Limit Thermostat

GE electric dryers use a cycling thermostat and a high-limit thermostat mounted on the heater housing. The cycling thermostat regulates normal drum temperature. The high-limit is a backup that cuts heat if temps climb too high, and unlike the thermal fuse it resets on its own once things cool. A high-limit that fails open kills heat entirely.

Both test the same way: continuity across the terminals at room temperature should read closed (near zero ohms). Parts run $10 to $25 each. Like the fuse, a tripped high-limit is a symptom of restricted airflow, so clean the vent as part of the fix.

Gas Models: Igniter, Coils, and Flame Sensor

Gas GE dryers heat differently. When you call for heat, the igniter glows orange, the gas valve coils open, and the burner lights. Watch the burner through the access port during a cycle:

  • Igniter glows but no flame: the gas valve coils are usually dead. They come as a kit, around $25 to $40, and are a common failure.
  • Igniter never glows: the igniter itself is open. Igniters are brittle and crack easily; replacements run $15 to $35. Test for continuity and never touch the ceramic with bare fingers.
  • Flame lights then quits fast: the flame sensor (radiant sensor) is failing.

Confirm the home gas supply is on and, if you have other gas appliances, that they still work.

Airflow and Venting: The Root Cause

I said it above and it earns its own section. A clogged vent is the underlying reason most heating parts die early. Restricted airflow traps heat inside the cabinet, cooks the thermal fuse and high-limit, and shortens element life. It is also a genuine fire hazard: lint is the fuel that dryer fires start from.

Do this while you have the machine apart:

  • Replace flexible foil or vinyl transition hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Foil accordion hose traps lint in every ridge.
  • Keep the duct run as short and straight as you can; every 90-degree elbow costs you airflow.
  • Use foil tape at the joints, not sheet-metal screws. Screws protrude into the duct and snag lint into a growing plug.
  • Clear the outside hood and make sure the damper flapper moves freely.

Step-by-Step Diagnostic Order

Guessing gets expensive. Work the circuit in the sequence that finds the fault with the least teardown:

  • Feel the outside vent during a running cycle. Cold, weak air points inward to the heat parts; strong warm air sends you to the duct.
  • Check the power at the outlet. On electric models, a clamp meter or plug tester confirms both 120-volt legs are live. Lose one leg and the drum spins cold.
  • Pull the back panel and test the thermal fuse first. It is the cheapest part and the most common failure, so it clears fast.
  • Test the high-limit and cycling thermostats on the heater housing for continuity.
  • Test the heating element across its terminals for the 10 to 20 ohm range.
  • On gas units, watch the burner through the port to sort igniter versus valve-coil failures.

Each check takes a couple of minutes with the machine already open, and stopping at the first open reading usually ends the hunt.

Tools and Parts to Have on Hand

You do not need a shop full of gear. A basic kit covers nearly every no-heat repair:

  • A digital multimeter with a continuity or ohms setting, around $20.
  • A 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch nut driver, since GE panels use hex-head screws.
  • A putty knife or panel tool to release spring clips on some cabinets.
  • A vent brush kit and a shop vacuum for the duct.

Because the same components fail again and again, many owners keep a spare thermal fuse and a thermostat kit in the laundry cabinet. At $8 to $25 combined, they turn a two-day parts wait into a same-afternoon fix.

What You Can Fix and When to Call a Pro

The thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, cycling thermostat, heating element, igniter, and gas coils are all DIY-friendly with a $20 multimeter and basic hand tools. Budget $8 to $70 in parts for most of these repairs against a $150 to $250 service call. The whole job runs 30 to 60 minutes once you have the part.

Call a technician if you smell gas and cannot find the source, if the dryer trips the breaker the moment it starts (a possible short in the element or wiring), or if the control board is suspect on a newer electronic model. Board diagnosis needs schematics and experience.

Work through it in order: confirm airflow, test the thermal fuse, then the element or igniter, then the thermostats. Nine times out of ten a GE dryer not heating is a $15 fuse and a vent that was overdue for a cleaning. Fix both and you will not see the problem again for years.
