Grout Calculator: How Much Grout You Need

Every bag of grout I have ever bought lists coverage in a range so wide it is nearly useless — “25 to 190 sq ft” tells you nothing. A proper grout calculator works from four numbers: tile length, tile width, joint width, and joint depth. Get those and you can predict your grout needs within a pound, which matters because running out mid-wall means a color-matched emergency store run, and grout mixed from two different lots can dry a shade apart. Here is the exact math I use to order grout for jobs, plus worked coverage tables so you can skip the arithmetic for common layouts.

The Grout Coverage Formula

Grout fills the network of joints between tiles. The volume of that network per square foot depends on how much joint length there is (small tiles = more joints) and the joint’s cross-section (width × depth). The industry-standard formula, in inches:

Grout (lbs per sq ft) = ((L + W) ÷ (L × W)) × J × D × C

  • L = tile length in inches
  • W = tile width in inches
  • J = joint width in inches (1/16 = 0.0625, 1/8 = 0.125, 3/16 = 0.1875, 1/4 = 0.25)
  • D = joint depth in inches — use the tile thickness (typical ceramic wall tile 0.25, porcelain floor tile 0.31–0.375, mosaics 0.25)
  • C = grout density constant ≈ 1.86 lbs per cubic inch of joint per sq ft basis for standard cement grout (this constant folds in the unit conversions; premixed grouts use volume instead — more below)

Multiply the result by your square footage, then add 10 percent waste, and that is your order.

Worked Example, Step by Step

Say you are grouting 120 sq ft of 12 × 24 inch porcelain floor tile, 3/8 inch thick, with 1/8 inch joints:

  1. (L + W) = 12 + 24 = 36
  2. (L × W) = 12 × 24 = 288
  3. 36 ÷ 288 = 0.125
  4. × J (0.125) = 0.015625
  5. × D (0.375) = 0.00586
  6. × 1.86 = 0.0109 lbs per sq ft
  7. × 120 sq ft = 1.31 lbs → with 10% waste, about 1.5 lbs of grout

That is why large-format tile jobs use shockingly little grout — a single 10 lb bag would do six of these floors. Now run the same 120 sq ft as 2 × 2 inch mosaic with 1/8 inch joints and 1/4 inch depth: (2+2)÷(2×2) = 1.0, × 0.125 × 0.25 × 1.86 = 0.058 lbs per sq ft, × 120 = about 7 lbs before waste. Same floor area, five times the grout. Joint count drives everything.

Calculated with typical tile thickness for each format (mosaics/wall tile 1/4 inch deep, floor tile 3/8 inch deep). Multiply by your square footage and add 10 percent.

Quick sanity checks from that table: a 100 sq ft floor of 12 × 12s with 3/16 joints needs about 2.2 lbs plus waste — call it a 5 lb box with plenty left for repairs. A 60 sq ft subway-tile shower with 1/16 joints needs under a pound of unsanded grout. A 30 sq ft mosaic shower floor with 1/8 joints wants about 2 lbs.

Sanded vs. Unsanded Changes the Product, Not the Math

Joint width picks your grout type before it picks your quantity: unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch, sanded for 1/8 inch and up (sand keeps wide joints from shrinking and cracking). Densities differ slightly — sanded runs a touch heavier — but the table above is close enough for both. What actually changes your purchase is package size: unsanded typically comes in 1, 5, and 10 lb boxes ($8–$15 for 5 lbs), sanded in 7, 10, and 25 lb bags ($12–$20 for 10 lbs). Buy one size up from your calculation; leftover dry grout stored airtight is free insurance for future repairs, and it is from the same dye lot.

Premixed and Epoxy Grout: Convert to Volume

Premixed acrylic and single-component grouts sell by volume — typically quart (about 4 lbs equivalent) and half-gallon (about 8 lbs equivalent) tubs at $15 to $50. Use the same formula, then figure roughly 4 lbs of cement-grout-equivalent per quart. Epoxy grout kits (Spectralock and similar, $60–$90 per unit) publish their own coverage charts per kit size; the same joint-volume math applies, but do not stretch a kit — partially used epoxy components do not keep, so round up to whole kits and plan your grouting session around the pot life.

Manual Calculation Cheat Sheet

  1. Measure tile L and W in inches. For odd shapes (hex, arabesque), use the bounding rectangle and add 15 percent.
  2. Pick joint width J. Rectified porcelain runs 1/16–1/8; standard ceramic 1/8–3/16; handmade look and saltillo up to 1/4–1/2.
  3. Use tile thickness for D. If you do not know it, 1/4 inch for wall tile, 3/8 inch for floor tile is safe.
  4. lbs/sq ft = ((L+W) ÷ (L×W)) × J × D × 1.86.
  5. Multiply by area, add 10 percent waste (15 percent for mosaics and first-timers — more grout ends up on the float and sponge than you expect).

More Worked Examples From Real Jobs

To make the formula second nature, here are three jobs straight from my estimate book. First, a 45 sq ft tub surround in 3 x 6 subway with 1/16-inch joints: the table gives 0.015 lbs per sq ft, so 45 × 0.015 = 0.68 lbs — a single 1 lb box of unsanded covers it with half left for the soap niche. Second, a 220 sq ft great-room floor in 24 x 24 porcelain at 3/16 joints: 220 × 0.011 = 2.4 lbs, so one small bag does the whole room — which surprises everyone, and is why big-format tile jobs always have leftover grout. Third, a 90 sq ft backsplash-and-floor combo in 2 x 2 mosaic at 1/8 joints: 90 × 0.058 = 5.2 lbs, plus 15 percent mosaic waste lands at 6 lbs — buy the 10 lb sanded bag, not two little boxes, and save five dollars.

Notice the pattern across all three: joint width matters, but tile size dominates. Halving the tile edge length roughly doubles grout consumption, while halving the joint width simply halves it. When a client wants to trim grout cost on a mosaic-heavy design, the honest answer is that the design, not the joint spec, sets the bill.

Why Real Jobs Drift From the Math

  • Uneven substrate: deep thinset ridges and slightly proud tiles increase effective joint depth by 10–20 percent.
  • Cushion-edge tile: the rounded edge widens the top of the joint; add 10 percent.
  • Sloppy sponging: aggressive washing pulls grout out of joints, and you re-pack — waste climbs.
  • Tumbled stone and textured tile: grout lodges in the surface texture; these jobs can consume 25–50 percent extra. Seal the stone before grouting.

My practical ordering rule after all the math: small-format or mosaic jobs, round up to the next full bag plus one; large-format floors, one 10 lb bag covers almost any room in a house. Run the formula, trust the table, keep the extra pound of matching dry grout on the shelf, and you will never stand in a half-grouted shower doing dye-lot roulette at the hardware store.
