The cap on a $22 bottle of Tide Ultra Concentrated is sized for old-style top-load washers using 18 gallons of water per cycle. Pour that same cap dose into a modern front loader using 6 to 8 gallons and you have just over-dosed by 200 percent. Figuring out how much liquid detergent to use in front loader matters because over-dosing is the single biggest cause of moldy gaskets, stinky drums, and pre-mature pump failures on $1,200 LG and Samsung front loaders. The correct dose almost always sits at one to two tablespoons per load, not the bottle cap fill line.
Why Front Loaders Need Less Detergent
Front-load washers tumble clothes through a small pool of water rather than agitating them in a full tub. Energy Star-certified front loaders use 13 to 17 gallons per cycle compared to 30 to 45 gallons for older top-loaders — less than half the water. Detergent concentration matters: too much detergent in low water creates a thick foam that prevents clothes from tumbling properly and traps soil against fabric instead of rinsing it away.

Read the bottle for actual load-size guidance specific to your detergent. The numbers on the cap correspond to particular load sizes, not arbitrary fill levels.
Signs You Are Using Too Much Detergent
Catch over-dosing before it damages your washer:
- Visible foam during the spin cycle through the window
- White residue on dark clothes after drying
- Musty smell developing in the drum within days of cleaning
