What Underlayment Actually Does
Underlayment is the thin layer between subfloor and finished floor, and depending on the product it can do five jobs: smooth minor subfloor imperfections, quiet the floor (both walking noise in the room and transmission to rooms below), block moisture vapor from concrete slabs, add a little warmth and comfort underfoot, and in tile systems, decouple the tile from subfloor movement so it doesn’t crack. Laminate: Where Underlayment Matters Most
Laminate is a floating floor of rigid planks, and it needs a thin, firm cushion — typically 2mm to 3mm — to sit quietly. Skip it and the floor clacks like tap shoes; over-cushion it and joints flex and eventually fail. Your options, cheapest to best:
- Standard PE foam ($0.15–$0.30/sq ft): the bare minimum. Fine for closets and rentals; sounds hollow in living spaces.
- Combination foam with vapor film ($0.30–$0.50): foam plus attached moisture barrier — the right pick over concrete slabs on a budget.

Vinyl Plank (LVP): Less Is More

Glue-down engineered wood typically gets no separate underlayment — the adhesive is the system, and premium urethane adhesives with built-in moisture control (roughly $1.50–$2.50/sq ft in adhesive cost) handle slab vapor.

Tile: Underlayment Is Structural, Not Optional
Tile doesn’t want cushion — it wants rigidity and crack protection. Over wood subfloors, that means 1/4″ or 1/2″ cement backer board ($10–$16 per 3×5 sheet) thinset-bedded and screwed, or an uncoupling membrane (the orange waffle mat and its competitors, $1.50–$2.50/sq ft) which absorbs the seasonal movement of wood so the tile above doesn’t crack. Over concrete, tile can go direct if the slab is flat and crack-free, but I still spec uncoupling membrane over any slab with hairline cracks — the membrane bridges them. Heated-floor mats double as underlayment in bathroom systems. Whatever you do, never lay tile on bare plywood or OSB with just thinset; it’s a guaranteed callback.
Concrete Slabs: The Moisture Rule That Overrides Everything
Every slab-on-grade or below-grade floor decision starts with moisture. Concrete constantly wicks ground moisture upward as vapor, and it will destroy flooring from below — cupped wood, moldy pad, adhesive failure. Minimum protection is a 6-mil polyethylene vapor retarder or an underlayment with an attached vapor film, sealed at seams. IIC (Impact Insulation Class) rates impact noise transfer to the room below — relevant in condos and second floors; higher is better, but note lab numbers describe whole floor assemblies, not the pad alone. STC rates airborne sound the same way. Compression resistance/density matters more than thickness — a dense 2mm pad outperforms a fluffy 5mm one everywhere except a mattress store. Perm rating below 1.0 means it functions as a vapor retarder. And “fits all floors” universal pads are usually optimized for none — buy the pad your flooring manufacturer lists as approved, because warranty claims get denied over unapproved underlayment more than any other install detail.

Installation Basics That Apply to Every Pad
However good your match, installation habits decide whether the underlayment performs. Roll pads out perpendicular to the direction the flooring will run so plank seams and pad seams don’t stack. Butt seams tight — never overlap foam or felt, which creates a ridge the floor will telegraph — and tape them with the manufacturer’s tape or quality sheathing tape so sections can’t drift during the flooring install. Vapor films over concrete are the exception: overlap those 8 inches at seams and run them a couple of inches up the wall, trimming after baseboards go on, so moisture has no seam path. Let both flooring and underlayment acclimate in the room for 48 hours at living temperature and humidity. And clean the subfloor like you mean it before anything rolls out — a single screw head or pebble under a pad becomes a click you’ll hunt for the rest of your life. Twenty minutes with a scraper, a broom, and a straightedge is the cheapest step of the entire project and the one most often skipped.
