Straight-cut planks lay themselves. The cuts that determine whether a floor looks professional or amateur are the ones around toilets, radiators, pipes, door jambs, and HVAC registers. How to cut flooring around objects well comes down to three things — a usable template, the right power tool for the material, and patience to dry-fit before committing. Every floor installer with a clean finish has built a system for these cuts, and the system isn’t hard to copy.
Tools You’ll Need
For most cuts: a jigsaw with fine-tooth wood or laminate blades (Bosch T101AO is the gold standard), an oscillating multi-tool like the Fein MultiMaster or Dewalt DCS356 with flush-cut blades, a coping saw, and a contour gauge (Empire Level 6-inch or 10-inch). For undercutting door jambs, a Crain 825 jamb saw or a flush-cut blade on the multi-tool. For hardwood and engineered, add a sharp utility knife and a pencil that marks darker than a graphite #2.
A small piece of scrap flooring as a marking gauge saves a surprising amount of measurement error — set it against the obstruction and trace the offset directly onto the plank.
The Universal Template Method
For complex shapes — toilet bases, oddly shaped radiator legs, decorative columns — make a paper or cardboard template. Use a brown paper grocery bag or a sheet of heavy kraft paper. Place it where the plank will sit, butt one edge against the previous plank, and trace the obstruction with a pencil following the curves exactly. Cut the paper template with scissors and verify the fit before transferring to the plank.
Lay the template on the new plank, mark the cut line, and use the jigsaw or multi-tool to make the actual cut. Sand the cut edge smooth with 120 grit. This method delivers cleaner cuts than freehand measurement on irregular shapes.
Cutting Around Toilets
Remove the toilet if at all possible — pulling a toilet adds 30 minutes but transforms the install. Drain the tank, disconnect supply, unbolt the closet flange, and lift. Now you have a clean circle to cut to.
For installs over the existing toilet (typically when wax ring replacement is out of scope), make a template using the bag method above. Cut the rough outline with a jigsaw, then trim back the final 1/16 inch with the multi-tool for a precise fit. Leave a 1/8-inch gap around the closet flange — the toilet base will cover it and the gap accommodates expansion.
Pipes and Radiators
For round pipes, measure the pipe diameter and center it on the plank. Drill a hole with a Forstner bit 1/4 inch larger than the pipe diameter — for a 3/4-inch radiator pipe, use a 1-inch bit. Then cut from the back edge of the plank to the hole with a fine jigsaw blade. After installing the plank, glue the small wedge piece back in place behind the pipe with PL Premium adhesive. Done well, the seam is barely visible.
For radiator legs, build a paper template that captures both the leg profile and the spacing between legs. Cut with a jigsaw on outside edges and a coping saw on inside curves. Leave 1/4-inch expansion gap from any wood or cast-iron radiator stand — pipe-attached radiators can move slightly.
Door Jambs and Casing
Use a Crain 825 jamb saw or oscillating multi-tool to undercut wood door jambs and casing. Set a piece of scrap flooring on a piece of underlayment next to the jamb — this is your guide for cut height. Lay the saw flat on top of the scrap and cut horizontally through the jamb. The flooring then slides cleanly underneath the casing for a finished look without quarter-round molding.
Metal door frames can’t be undercut. Cut the flooring to fit around the frame with a 1/4-inch expansion gap, then cover the gap with a matching T-molding or scribed quarter-round.
HVAC Floor Registers and Vents
Measure the register opening dimensions and add 1/8 inch on all sides to allow expansion movement of the floor. Mark the opening on the plank, drill 1/4-inch starter holes at the inside corners, then cut with a jigsaw between the starter holes. Test-fit the register and adjust if needed. Most floor register frames have a flange that covers a slight gap, but cleaner cuts look more professional and reduce dust buildup at the edges.
Material-Specific Cutting Tips
Laminate cuts cleanest with a fine-tooth jigsaw blade (T101AO) and the decorative face down — the blade lifts the chip out from the underside, leaving the visible face clean. LVP and SPC hybrid score and snap easily with a utility knife for straight cuts but need a fine jigsaw blade for curves to avoid melting the wear layer. Engineered hardwood cuts cleanly face up with a 60-tooth carbide blade.
Tile around objects requires a wet saw with a diamond blade for round holes, or a tile nippler for irregular shapes. A diamond hole saw at 1,000 to 2,000 RPM cuts cleaner circles than a hammer drill with a masonry bit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Three failures dominate. First, forgetting expansion gaps — every obstruction, every wall, every cabinet kickplate needs 1/4 to 3/8 inch of expansion clearance. Second, cutting too aggressively on the first pass — leave 1/16 inch and trim back rather than starting too small. Third, skipping the template on complex shapes — eyeballing curves wastes more material than the five-minute template build costs in time.
Quick Tips That Save Time
Keep a small piece of scrap flooring nearby as your offset gauge for marking parallel lines. Use a contour gauge for irregular shapes that are hard to template — push the gauge against the obstruction, then transfer the captured profile directly onto the plank. Pre-drill starter holes for inside cuts to keep jigsaw blades from wandering on the first pass.
Finally, sand or chamfer cut edges with a fine sanding block — visible saw marks scream amateur even when the fit is tight.
When Quarter Round Beats Perfect Cuts
Some obstructions resist clean cuts no matter the skill level. Stone fireplace hearths, irregular field stone, and ornate door casings with deep relief are easier to finish with a coped quarter-round or shoe molding scribed to the obstruction. Painted to match the trim or stained to match the floor, scribed molding looks intentional and saves an hour per obstruction.
