Water is coming through the ceiling, it is still raining, and nobody sane is climbing onto a wet roof. This is exactly the situation where knowing how to fix a leaking roof from the inside saves drywall, insulation, and framing until a proper exterior repair is possible. Interior fixes are damage control, not roof repair — but done well, an attic-side intervention can divert a gallon-per-hour leak into a bucket for weeks, buy you a spot on a busy roofer’s schedule, and give your insurance adjuster the documentation trail they want to see. Here is the sequence, from emergency triage to attic-side patching.

Step 1: Control the Water in the Living Space First
Before heading to the attic, stop the ceiling damage in progress. Move furniture and electronics, lay down a tarp or trash bags topped with towels, and set a bucket under the drip. If the drip is splashing, pin a length of string or twine at the drip point and run it down into the bucket — water follows the string silently and without splatter, an old plumber’s trick that works startlingly well. Kill power to affected ceiling fixtures at the breaker if water is anywhere near them; water tracks along wiring and pools in fixture canopies.
Step 2: Drain a Ceiling Bulge Immediately
A sagging, water-filled drywall bulge is a controlled demolition waiting to happen. Do not leave it to burst. Put a bucket underneath, then drive a screwdriver or drill a 1/2-inch hole through the lowest point of the bulge and let it drain. Punch additional holes as the pooling shifts. This feels destructive, but a deliberate hole is a $10 patch; a collapsed saturated ceiling is a $500-to-$1,500 drywall replacement plus soaked flooring. Drain it even if the rain has stopped — trapped water keeps soaking the paper facing and grows mold within 48 hours.
Step 3: Get Into the Attic and Find the Entry Point
Bring a strong flashlight or headlamp, and step only on joists or lay a board across them — wet drywall will not hold your weight. Now find where water is actually entering, which is rarely above the ceiling stain. Water enters at a penetration or failed shingle, runs downslope along the top of the decking, follows a rafter or truss chord sideways, and drops off at a nail point or joint sometimes 10 to 15 feet from the entry. Trace uphill:
- Follow the wet streak on the underside of the decking upslope until it dries. The highest wet point is at or very near the entry.
- Check the usual suspects in that zone: plumbing vent boots, chimney flashing, valley lines, skylight curbs, sidewall step flashing, and any nail with a water bead hanging from it.
- In daylight, kill your light and look for pinhole daylight through the deck — a reliable locator for nail pops and cracked boots.
- Mark the entry point with chalk, a marker, or a zip tie around the nearest rafter. You will need to find it again for the roofer, and dry wood hides evidence.
If it is a bright day and you cannot find the source, run a garden-hose test later with a helper in the attic: wet the roof in sections, working upslope, waiting a few minutes per zone until the drip reappears.
Step 4: Build a Diversion — Bucket, Tarp Funnel, or Both
If active dripping continues, divert before you patch. The simplest fix is a bucket on a board spanning two joists directly under the drip; check and empty it on a schedule (a 5-gallon bucket handles roughly a day of moderate dripping). For spread-out or wandering leaks, build a funnel from 6-mil plastic sheeting or a small tarp: staple or tack the plastic to the rafters upslope and to either side of the leak, sag the center into a channel, and drain the low corner into a bucket — or run it into a length of garden hose or sump tubing routed to a larger container. Slope is everything; make sure every part of the plastic drains to the collection point, because a flat pocket will fill, stretch, and dump. Never pierce the plastic mid-span with a staple.
Step 5: Patch the Underside of the Deck
Once the immediate flow is managed — ideally once the decking surface is only damp, not streaming — apply a temporary attic-side patch at the marked entry point:
- Roofing cement (wet-surface formula): Henry 208R Wet Patch or Black Jack All-Weather ($8–$14 per quart) trowels onto damp wood and seals nail holes, split boards, and gaps around penetrations from below. Press it into the hole with a putty knife and feather 2 to 3 inches beyond in all directions. For holes larger than a nail, embed a piece of fiberglass mesh or even cotton fabric into the first coat and cap with a second.
- Flashing tape on the decking: Butyl or bitumen flashing tape (Flex Tape, Gorilla Waterproof Patch, or a scrap of ice-and-water membrane) sticks adequately to dry-ish plywood. Warm the tape and the wood with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer for a dramatically better bond, and roller-press hard. Tape works best on clean plywood; it bonds poorly to dusty skip sheathing.
- Plug active nail-point drips: A drip hanging off a shiner (a nail that missed the rafter) can be temporarily stopped by coating the nail in roofing cement. Do not pull the nail — you will open a clean hole to the sky.
Leave the diversion plastic in place beneath any patch. Attic-side patches fail without warning because water pressure works from the far side of the wood, pushing the patch off rather than onto the deck. That is also the fundamental reason interior repairs are temporary: roofing sheds water in overlapping layers from above, and no amount of sealant applied against the flow direction replicates that.
Step 6: Deal With Wet Insulation
Pull soaked fiberglass batts away from the leak zone and drape them over joists to dry; wet fiberglass loses most of its R-value temporarily but recovers if dried within a few days. Saturated blown-in cellulose does not recover — bag and remove it, note the area in square feet for the insurance claim, and plan on replacement. Leaving wet insulation against drywall is the fastest route to a moldy, stained ceiling even after the leak itself is controlled. Run a box fan in the attic if power is safely available.
Step 7: Document Everything for the Roofer and Insurer
Photograph the ceiling damage, the attic streaks, the entry point before and after patching, wet insulation, and every bucket of water. Note dates, times, and the storm involved — wind and hail events matter for coverage. Insurers generally cover sudden storm-caused interior damage but not gradual leaks or the worn roofing itself, and they expect “reasonable mitigation,” which is exactly what your tarps, buckets, and patches demonstrate. Save receipts for tarps, sealant, and fans; mitigation costs are frequently reimbursable. Then get an exterior repair scheduled promptly: an attic-side patch is a two-to-eight-week bridge, not a fix, and every additional wetting cycle grows the repair from a $300 flashing job toward decking replacement.
What Not to Do
Do not spray expanding foam into a leak path — it traps water in the deck, hides the entry point, and infuriates the roofer who has to dig it out. Do not staple plastic flat against the underside of the decking with no drainage path; you are building a hidden reservoir over your ceiling. Do not ignore a leak because it stopped when the rain did. And do not climb onto a wet or icy roof to “just tarp it real quick” — emergency exterior tarping is legitimate, but it is daylight, dry-surface, two-person work with proper anchoring, and falls kill far more homeowners than leaks ever will.
