Step-by-Step Outlet Replacement

With the power confirmed off, remove the cover plate screw and pull the plate off. Unscrew the two long mounting screws holding the receptacle to the box. Join all the hot wires together with a six-inch jumper of the same gauge wire under a Wago 221 lever nut or an Ideal Wing Nut. Connect the jumper to the brass screw on the new outlet. Restore power at the breaker. Plug in the RT250 tester to confirm correct wiring. Test with a known-good appliance like a lamp or phone charger. If everything works, you are done. If the tester shows an issue, turn the breaker off and re-inspect your connections.

Some problems are beyond DIY scope. Burnt or melted insulation means the circuit was overloaded and the wiring may be compromised farther back in the wall. Aluminum branch wiring requires special CO/ALR-rated devices and antioxidant compound. Knob and tube wiring or two-wire systems without a ground need an electrician familiar with older homes. Any signs of water damage in the box, scorched conductors, or buzzing sounds should send you straight to a licensed pro.
