Spraying bleach down a drain doesn’t kill gnats. The eggs and larvae live in a layer of gelatinous biofilm clinging to the inside of your pipes, and bleach slides right past it without penetrating the gunk where the bugs actually breed. Anyone trying to learn how to get rid of drain gnats permanently needs to attack the biofilm itself, not just the adults flying around the sink. Once the breeding surface is physically gone, the gnats disappear within 7-10 days and don’t come back.
Drain gnats — usually phorid flies or moth flies (genus Psychoda) — are tiny black or brownish flies maybe 1/8 inch long. They hover near drains, behave sluggishly compared to fruit flies, and leave dark smudges on countertops near the sink. Fruit flies, by contrast, are reddish, faster, and drawn to ripe fruit. The treatments are different, so identifying correctly matters.
Step 1: Confirm the Source Drain
Don’t start treating drains randomly. Tape a piece of clear packing tape sticky-side down over the drain opening of every suspect sink, shower, or floor drain at bedtime. Leave a small gap on one edge for airflow. By morning, you’ll have gnats stuck to the tape from whichever drains are active breeding sites.
Common offenders, ranked roughly by frequency:
- Bathroom sink drains (especially seldom-used guest bathrooms)
- Kitchen sink drains under heavy food prep
- Floor drains in basements and laundry rooms
- Shower drains with hair buildup
- Garbage disposals
- Condensate drains on HVAC units
If the tape catches gnats overnight, that drain is breeding flies. Often two or three drains share the problem, especially if they connect to the same waste line.
Step 2: Physically Scrub the Biofilm
This is the step that actually works. Pour 1 cup of boiling water down the drain to soften the slime, then use a flexible drain brush — a Vastar 25-inch nylon snake brush ($9 on Amazon) or a similar tool — to physically scrub the pipe walls.
Insert the brush and rotate it as you push it down. Pull it back out covered in dark gray or black goo. Rinse and repeat until the brush comes out clean, which usually takes 4-6 passes per drain. For kitchen sinks, also pull the basket strainer and clean the underside — biofilm builds up there too.

Step 4: Trap the Adult Flies
The scrubbing and enzymes break the breeding cycle, but the adults already flying around will hang on for another week or two unless you trap them. A simple apple cider vinegar trap works well:
- Pour 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into a bowl
- Add 2-3 drops of dish soap to break the surface tension
- Cover with plastic wrap and poke 6-8 small holes
- Place near the affected drain overnight
You’ll catch most of the adults within 48 hours. A sticky fly trap from a hardware store ($4) placed near the drain catches the rest. Don’t bother with bug zappers — drain gnats aren’t strongly attracted to UV light.
Step 5: Address Hidden Breeding Sites
If the gnats come back within two weeks, you missed a source. The usual suspects:
- P-trap under the sink — biofilm builds inside the U-bend itself. Unscrew and clean it manually.
- Disposal flange — the rubber baffle in the garbage disposal harbors slime on its underside. Pull it out and scrub it.
- Wall-mounted overflow drain — bathroom sinks have a hidden overflow channel that’s almost never cleaned and breeds gnats constantly.
- HVAC condensate line — drains often empty into a floor drain, carrying organic material that feeds new biofilm downstream.
- Sump pump basin — standing water plus organic debris equals a perfect breeding pool.
For overflow drains in bathroom sinks, use a small bottle brush or pipe cleaner to scrub the inside of the overflow port. The buildup in there is often substantial.
What Doesn’t Work (And Why)
Bleach kills the adult flies it directly contacts but slides over biofilm without penetrating it. Within a day, larvae continue maturing and a new wave emerges.
Boiling water alone won’t reach pipe walls more than a few inches below the strainer before cooling.
Baking soda and vinegar create a foaming reaction that looks dramatic but has almost no cleaning power. The fizz quickly neutralizes itself and runs out the drain.
Drano and other lye-based chemical cleaners are designed for hair clogs and grease, not biofilm. They also damage older pipes.
Preventing Re-Infestation
Once the drain is clean, simple maintenance keeps gnats from coming back:
- Run hot water down every drain for 30 seconds, twice a week
- Apply enzyme cleaner monthly to high-use drains
- Keep garbage disposal blades clear of food debris — grind ice cubes and citrus peels weekly
- Make sure little-used guest bathroom drains get water through them at least every 2 weeks
- Cover floor drains with a fitted screen when they’re not being used
