How to Install a Dryer Cord: 3-Prong vs 4-Prong Done Right

Most new dryers ship without a power cord because outlet configurations vary from house to house. Step 4: Connect the Cord

First, secure the strain-relief bracket through the cord-access hole so the cord cannot be yanked loose. Then connect the wires:

  • 4-prong cord: the two outer wires (usually black and red) go to the two outer hot terminals; the white neutral goes to the center terminal; the green ground attaches to the dryer frame’s green ground screw.
  • 3-prong cord: the two outer wires connect to the outer hot terminals; the center wire connects to the center neutral terminal (with the bonding strap still in place tying neutral to the frame).

Tighten every terminal screw firmly. Loose connections cause arcing, overheating, and fire. Tug each wire gently to confirm it is seated.

Step 5: Button Up and Test

Reinstall the terminal block cover plate. Plug the dryer into the wall outlet, then switch the breaker back ON. Run a short test cycle and listen and watch for normal operation. If the breaker trips, the outlet sparks, or anything smells hot, shut it down immediately and recheck your connections, because something is wired wrong.

Common Mistakes That Cause Problems

A handful of errors account for most dryer cord failures, and all are avoidable. The most dangerous is leaving the bonding strap installed on a 4-wire setup, which keeps neutral tied to the frame and undermines the separate ground. The reverse, removing the strap on a 3-wire installation, leaves the frame ungrounded entirely. Loose terminal screws are another frequent culprit; they cause arcing and heat that can scorch the terminal block or start a fire, so always tighten firmly and tug-test. Forgetting the strain-relief bracket lets the cord pull on the terminals over time and work connections loose. Finally, never reuse a cracked or heat-damaged cord, and never file down or remove a prong to force a mismatched fit.

Why Cord Type and Bonding Strap Go Together

It is worth restating because it is the crux of the whole job: the cord and the bonding strap are a matched pair. A 3-wire cord has no separate ground, so the strap stays in place to ground the frame through neutral. A 4-wire cord brings its own dedicated ground wire, so the strap must come off to keep neutral and ground separate, which is the safer modern arrangement.
