How to Lay Parquet Flooring: Step-by-Step Guide

Most parquet failures happen in the first 48 hours of the install, before the adhesive has fully cured. Learning how to lay parquet flooring correctly means spending as much time on layout, subfloor prep, and dry fitting as on the actual glue-down. Done right, a parquet floor takes 3 to 5 days per 200 square feet of room and delivers a surface that lasts 50-plus years. Done wrong, you will be pulling blocks in year two. This guide walks through the complete install process — subfloor through final finish — with the specific steps and tools a competent DIYer actually needs.

Tools and Materials Before You Start

Gather everything before opening the first adhesive pail. Mid-install tool runs kill open time and ruin joints. The complete kit for a glue-down herringbone or block parquet install:

  • Notched trowel (3/16 by 1/4 inch V-notch for thin blocks, 1/4 by 1/4 inch for thicker)
  • Rubber mallet and tapping block
  • 100-pound three-section floor roller (rentable for $30/day)
  • Miter saw with 80-tooth finish blade or a track saw
  • Moisture meter (pin-type for wood, concrete probe for slabs)
  • Laser level or chalk line
  • Framing square for 90-degree layout confirmation

Step 1: Acclimate the Wood

This step alone prevents 90 percent of future complaints. Bring the parquet into the install room, open the boxes, and let the blocks sit for 7 to 14 days. The conditions should match what the room will normally experience year-round — 65 to 75 degrees F, 35 to 55 percent relative humidity.

Rush this step and the blocks will either shrink and gap in winter or swell and cup in summer. Confirm acclimation with a pin-type moisture meter; blocks should read within 2 percent of the subfloor moisture content. If the numbers do not match, wait longer or adjust room humidity.

Step 2: Test and Prepare the Subfloor

Subfloor tolerance for parquet is 1/8 inch variation in 10 feet — tighter than any other wood floor. Start with a 10-foot straightedge and check systematically across the whole floor.

For concrete slabs: grind high spots, fill low spots with self-leveling underlayment (Mapei Ultraplan or Ardex K15). Test moisture with a calcium chloride kit — MVER should be below 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours. Above that, apply a liquid-applied moisture barrier before adhesive.

For plywood: screw down any loose sheets, sand joints flush, fill knot holes and nail dimples with wood filler. Subfloor moisture content should test below 14 percent.

Vacuum thoroughly. Any dust left on the subfloor lives in your glue line forever.

Step 3: Plan the Layout

Layout is where DIY installs go wrong most often. Rooms are rarely square, and the center of the visible wall is rarely the center of the room. Find the geometric center first:

  1. Measure the longest wall — snap a chalk line parallel to it through the room’s midpoint
  2. Measure the perpendicular dimension — snap a second chalk line crossing the first at 90 degrees
  3. Confirm 90 degrees using the 3-4-5 triangle method, not just a framing square
  4. Dry-lay blocks along both chalk lines in the intended pattern for 8 to 10 feet in each direction
  5. Check where the perimeter cuts will land — adjust the center point so perimeter cuts are at least 4 inches wide on all walls

Herringbone starts from the room center and works outward. Simple block patterns start from a corner and work out. Chevron starts from a center spine line. Nailing the layout before glue saves hours later.

Step 4: Dry-Lay the First Several Rows

Before opening adhesive, dry-lay a 4-foot by 4-foot test area at the room center. Confirm pattern alignment, block orientation, and cut fit. This is the last chance to catch spacing issues.

For herringbone, mark the exact centerline and lay the first two blocks in the V-shape that anchors the rest of the pattern. Every subsequent block references these two. For chevron, the miters have to land exactly at the spine line — off by 1 degree compounds into visible drift across the room.

Step 5: Spread Adhesive and Set Blocks

Work in sections no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet. The open time on MS-polymer adhesive is 40 to 60 minutes at 70 degrees F — if the adhesive skins over before you set the block, the bond fails silently.

Pull the trowel at a consistent 45-degree angle. The goal is a uniform ridge pattern with no missed spots. Back-butter the first few blocks if the subfloor has minor pores that could starve the bond.

Set each block with firm downward pressure, sliding it into position against the adjacent block with a 1/16 inch expansion gap at edges. Tap into place with the rubber mallet and tapping block — never strike the block face directly. Squeeze-out adhesive comes off cleanly with isopropyl alcohol if caught within the first hour. After it cures, you will be sanding.

Step 6: Roll the Floor

Within 30 minutes of setting the last block in each section, roll the floor with a 100-pound three-section roller. This forces full adhesive contact and eliminates hollow spots. Roll in two perpendicular directions for best coverage.

Any block that sits proud by more than 1/32 inch after rolling needs to be tapped flush immediately. Once the adhesive sets, you cannot recover that plane and the high spot will show in final finish.

Step 7: Cut Perimeter Pieces

Leave the perimeter for last. Measure each border cut individually — walls are not parallel, even in new construction. Cut on the miter saw rather than scribing on the floor; the cleaner edge shows less under the shoe molding.

Maintain a 1/2 inch expansion gap at all walls, pipes, and fixed fixtures. This gap lives under the baseboard or quarter round. Skipping it causes the entire floor to buckle in summer humidity.

Step 8: Cure, Sand, and Finish

Let the floor cure undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours before walking. Full cure runs 5 to 7 days — no heavy furniture, no rugs, no direct sunlight through windows during that period.

For site-finished parquet, sand with 40, 60, 80, then 120-grit in sequence. Use a drum sander for the field and an edger for perimeters. Buff with a 120-grit screen before finish application.

Apply two to three coats of a quality finish. Bona Traffic HD (water-based two-component urethane) dries in 2 to 3 hours per coat and delivers 15-year wear. For a more traditional look, penetrating oils like Rubio Monocoat give a matte natural appearance and spot-repair beautifully.

  • Skipping the moisture test on concrete slabs — rising moisture destroys the floor
  • No expansion gap — floor buckles at first humid summer
  • Walking on glue before cure — blocks shift, leaving permanent misalignment
  • Insufficient trowel depth — hollow spots crack underfoot
