A garbage disposal that suddenly stops working mid-grind is not necessarily broken. Nine times out of ten, the motor’s built-in thermal protector has tripped, and knowing how to reset garbage disposal units is all it takes to get things running again. The entire process takes less than two minutes and requires no tools beyond a flashlight and possibly an Allen wrench.
Why Your Disposal Needs Resetting
Every residential garbage disposal has a small thermal overload switch that cuts power to the motor when it detects excessive heat or current draw. This safety feature prevents the motor from burning out when something jams the grinding chamber or when the unit processes too much waste at once. Running the disposal without water also triggers the overload because water acts as both a coolant and a lubricant for the grinding process.
Locate the Reset Button
Open the cabinet under the sink and look at the bottom of the disposal canister. The reset button is a small button, typically red on InSinkErator models and red or black on Waste King and Moen units, centered on the base plate. When the overload has tripped, this button protrudes slightly from the housing, roughly 1/4 inch further out than its normal flush position.
If you cannot see the button, feel for it with your finger. On some installations, the disposal is positioned at an angle that makes the button hard to spot visually. A small mirror held underneath can help.
Step-by-Step Reset Process
- Turn the wall switch to the off position. If the disposal is plugged into an outlet under the sink, unplug it
- Wait at least 4-5 minutes for the motor to cool down. Pressing the reset button on a hot motor may cause it to trip again immediately
- Check for a jam by looking into the drain opening with a flashlight. Remove any visible objects with tongs or pliers. Never reach into the chamber with your fingers
- If you suspect a jam you cannot see, insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench into the hex socket on the bottom of the unit and turn it back and forth to free the flywheel
- Press the reset button firmly. You should feel it click inward and stay flush with the housing
- Turn on cold water at a full stream
- Flip the wall switch on. The disposal should run normally
Reset Button Pops Back Out
If the button refuses to stay pressed in, the motor has not cooled enough. Wait another 10 minutes and try again. Persistent tripping after adequate cooling time suggests one of several deeper issues:
- Internal jam: The Allen wrench technique did not fully clear the obstruction. Try working the wrench more aggressively in both directions
- Failed capacitor: The start capacitor cannot deliver enough initial torque, causing the motor to stall and overheat instantly. Replacement capacitors cost $10-$20
- Worn motor bearings: Friction from degraded bearings generates excessive heat. At this point, replacement is more cost-effective than repair
- Electrical problem: A voltage drop from a damaged cord, loose wire nut, or faulty outlet can cause the motor to draw excess current
No Sound at All After Resetting
If pressing the reset button does not produce any hum or motor sound when you flip the switch, check these items in order:
- Verify the outlet has power by plugging in a lamp or phone charger
- Check the circuit breaker in your electrical panel for the kitchen circuit
- Inspect the power cord connection at the bottom of the disposal for loose wires
- Test the wall switch by replacing it with a known-working switch or bypassing it temporarily with a wire nut
Complete electrical silence after confirming power is present at the outlet typically means the motor has failed and the unit needs replacement.
Preventing Frequent Resets
Proper use habits keep the thermal protector from tripping in the first place. Always run cold water before turning on the disposal and keep it flowing for 15 seconds after the grinding stops. Feed waste in small handfuls rather than dumping everything at once. Avoid grinding fibrous materials like corn husks, onion skins, and artichoke leaves that wrap around the impellers and stall the motor.
Once a month, grind a cup of ice cubes followed by a lemon wedge to clean the grinding surfaces and prevent buildup that restricts flywheel movement. A clean disposal runs more efficiently and draws less current, which directly reduces the chance of an overload trip.
If your disposal shares a circuit with the dishwasher, avoid running both simultaneously. The combined current draw can trip the kitchen circuit breaker and sometimes triggers the disposal’s internal overload at the same time. Dedicated 20-amp circuits for garbage disposals are standard in newer homes, but older wiring often groups the disposal, dishwasher, and one or two counter outlets on a single 15-amp breaker. An electrician can add a dedicated circuit for $150-$300 if frequent tripping is a problem.
