A gas furnace that fires up, runs for 6 to 8 seconds, then shuts down before the blower kicks on is doing exactly what it should — protecting the house from unburned gas. When Cleaning Does Not Fix It

If the furnace still short-cycles after a clean sensor, three other issues mimic flame sensor failure:

  • Cracked porcelain insulator: the white ceramic piece that isolates the rod. Hairline crack lets current bleed to the chassis. Replace the sensor.
  • Loose ground: the burner assembly must be electrically grounded. A loose mounting screw breaks the path. Tighten all burner-mount screws.
  • Reversed line/neutral at the receptacle: hot to neutral swap fools the board’s polarity check. Verify with a $15 outlet tester.
