Most people obsess over the plank and ignore the thin layer underneath it — and that is exactly backward. Installing laminate with underlayment is not optional; that quarter-inch of foam, felt, or cork is what keeps your floor quiet, comfortable underfoot, and protected from subfloor moisture. Skip it or pick the wrong type, and you get a floor that clicks and hollow-thumps with every step, telegraphs every subfloor lump, and can void your warranty. Here is how to choose and install it correctly.

Why Laminate Needs Underlayment at All

Laminate is a floating floor — it is not glued or nailed to the subfloor, so it rests on top and locks edge to edge. Underlayment serves four jobs at once: it cushions the planks so the locking joints do not stress and break, it dampens sound, it smooths out minor subfloor imperfections up to about 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and over concrete it blocks moisture vapor that would otherwise warp the boards from below.

Without that layer, the rigid planks ride directly on a hard subfloor, and every gap or high spot becomes a flex point. Over time the locking edges chip, gaps open, and the surface starts to feel and sound cheap.

Attached Pad vs. Separate Underlayment

Many modern laminates ship with a pre-attached pad bonded to the bottom of each plank, usually 1mm to 2mm of foam or IXPE. This saves a step and works fine over a wood subfloor.

The important rule: never stack a separate foam underlayment under a plank that already has an attached pad. Doubling up makes the floor too spongy, overstresses the joints, and is a classic warranty violation. If your laminate has an attached pad and you are installing over concrete, you still need a separate 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier — just not a second cushion.

The Main Types of Underlayment

  • Standard foam (polyethylene): The cheapest option at roughly $0.20 to $0.40 per square foot. Basic cushioning and sound control. Fine for bedrooms over a wood subfloor.
  • Foam with vapor barrier (combo): Foam laminated to a moisture film, often $0.30 to $0.55 per square foot. The default choice for concrete slabs and basements.
  • Cork: Natural, dense, and an excellent sound deadener at $0.50 to $0.90 per square foot. Great for upstairs rooms and condos with sound requirements, but it does not include a moisture barrier, so add one over concrete.
  • Felt: Recycled fiber, dense and quiet, around $0.40 to $0.70 per square foot. A favorite for multi-story homes; many felt products include a vapor film.

Matching Underlayment to Your Subfloor

Over a plywood or OSB subfloor on an upper floor, standard foam or cork is plenty — moisture is not a concern, so you focus on sound. Over a concrete slab, including any basement or slab-on-grade home, a 6-mil vapor barrier is mandatory. Concrete wicks moisture continuously, and laminate’s fiberboard core swells permanently when it gets wet. Tape the seams of the barrier and run it 2 to 3 inches up the walls behind the baseboards.

If you are in a condo or apartment, check your HOA’s sound rating requirement. Many buildings mandate an IIC (Impact Insulation Class) of 50 or higher, which usually means cork or a premium acoustic underlayment rather than basic foam.

How to Install It Step by Step

  1. Clean and dry the subfloor. Sweep, vacuum, and check for high spots with a 6-foot straightedge. Grind or fill anything over 3/16 inch.
  2. Over concrete, lay the vapor barrier first, overlapping seams 6 to 8 inches and taping them.
  3. Roll out the underlayment in the same direction you will run the planks. Butt the seams edge to edge — do not overlap cushioning, or you create high ridges.
  4. Tape the underlayment seams with the manufacturer’s recommended tape to keep them from shifting during install.
  5. Only roll out a few feet ahead of your work so you are not walking on bare cushioning and tearing it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest error is doubling pads, as noted. Close behind is skipping the vapor barrier over concrete because the floor “seemed dry” — slabs cure and breathe for years, and a dry day proves nothing. Tape a 2-foot square of plastic to the slab overnight; if condensation forms underneath, you have moisture and you absolutely need the barrier.

Also resist using a thick, overly soft underlayment to hide a bad subfloor. Padding cushions sound, not structure. A wavy subfloor needs to be leveled, not buried under foam, or the planks will flex and fail at the joints.

Underlayment Thickness and R-Value

Two specs help you compare products beyond the material type. Thickness for laminate underlayment is almost always 2mm to 3mm — thicker is not better here, because too much cushion lets the planks flex and stresses the click joints. Stick to what the laminate manufacturer specifies, usually around 2mm to 3mm of foam, felt, or cork.

If you have in-floor radiant heat, check the underlayment’s R-value, which measures thermal resistance. A high R-value insulates and fights against the heat reaching your feet, so for radiant-heated rooms you want a low-R, radiant-rated underlayment. Many cork and standard foams are fine, but a thick insulating pad will waste your heating and may exceed the maximum R-value your radiant system allows.

Sound Ratings Explained

If quiet matters — in a condo, an upstairs bedroom, or a home office over a living room — pay attention to two acoustic ratings often printed on the underlayment. STC (Sound Transmission Class) measures how well the floor blocks airborne sound like voices and TV. IIC (Impact Insulation Class) measures how well it muffles impact noise like footsteps and dropped objects. Many buildings require an IIC of 50 or higher. Cork and premium felt or rubber underlayments score notably better here than basic foam, which is why they cost more. If your building has no requirement and you simply want a less hollow-sounding floor, even a mid-grade felt makes a noticeable difference underfoot.
