An incandescent bulb that pops once a year is normal. A fixture that burns through bulbs every two months is broadcasting an electrical problem you should not ignore. The Anatomy of a Bulb Failure
Each bulb type fails differently and gives different clues. Incandescent and halogen bulbs fail when the tungsten filament thins, breaks, and the bulb goes dark. You hear the tiny rattle of the broken filament when you shake it. LEDs fail when the driver — the small electronic board inside the base — overheats or hits a voltage spike. You usually see the LED go dim, flicker, or get stuck on dim before it dies entirely.
CFLs (compact fluorescent) fail when the ballast wears out or the gas inside the tube depletes. They often emit a burning smell or visible scorch marks at the base before they quit. Each pattern points to a different root cause, and matching the failure mode to the issue saves money on replacements.
Common Causes of Premature Burnout
Eight causes account for nearly every fast-burnout case I see:
- Voltage above 120V: utilities sometimes run at 122 to 125 volts, which shortens bulb life by 50 percent or more
- Loose socket connections: arcing at the base burns out drivers fast

Check Your Voltage First

Loose Connections Inside the Fixture
Turn off the breaker, drop the fixture, and inspect the wire nuts. If a wire pulls out of a nut with light pressure, you have found the problem. Enclosed Fixtures and Heat Buildup
Glass globes, sealed flush mounts, and recessed cans without proper ventilation trap heat that cooks LED drivers. Use bulbs specifically labeled “enclosed fixture rated” for these locations. Brands that print clear ratings: Philips, GE, Cree, and Feit.
Even with rated bulbs, fixture temperatures in attic-mounted recessed cans can exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. If you have a row of recessed cans in a hot attic that all burn out together, install IC-rated airtight LED retrofit modules like the Halo HLB6 ($25 each at Home Depot). When to Call an Electrician
Some bulb-burnout patterns point to wiring issues you should not DIY. Call a licensed electrician when:

Choosing Bulbs That Actually Last
Stick with bulbs from manufacturers who publish real specs and stand behind a five-year warranty. Avoid the cheapest LED multipacks at Walmart or Costco — they often use inferior drivers and skip thermal management. Check the L70 rating on the package. L70 tells you how many hours until the LED drops to 70 percent of original brightness. A solid bulb shows 25,000 to 50,000 hours. Anything under 15,000 hours is a poor value even if the upfront price is low. Pay $4 a bulb once instead of $1.50 every three months.
