A light bulb breaks at the glass and leaves the threaded metal base spinning in the socket. It happens to every homeowner eventually, and the worst response is the panicked one — sticking a screwdriver into a powered fixture is how every electrician’s “stories from the field” article begins. Step One: Cut the Power Completely

Cut a raw potato in half. Press the cut side firmly into the metal base, then twist counterclockwise. The starch and moisture grip the metal threads enough to unscrew the base.

Method 3: Bar of Soap

If a potato is not handy, a fresh bar of soap works similarly. The soap conforms to the metal base and provides enough friction to turn it. Less effective than the potato but still useful for emergencies.

Method 4: Socket Extractor Tools

Method 5: Cordless Drill With Tap

For deeply seized metal bases that resist the simpler methods, a cordless drill set to reverse can spin the base out. Use a tap or threaded extractor that bites into the soft aluminum. Run the drill slowly to avoid stripping the threads.

This is a last-resort method because it can damage the socket if not done carefully. If you are not confident, skip to method 6.

Method 6: Replace the Socket Entirely

If the metal base is completely fused to the socket — common in old fixtures, exterior lights with water exposure, or sockets that have arced — replacing the socket is faster than fighting the stuck base.

Most light fixture sockets are standardized E26 medium base in the US and unscrew from the fixture body or are retained by a single Phillips screw. Replacement sockets cost $3 to $8 at any hardware store. Time to swap: 10 to 20 minutes with the power off.

Specific Fixture Considerations

Different fixtures have different hazards.

Recessed cans — work above your head, use a stable ladder, watch for falling glass. The tight space may rule out pliers; potato or extractor often works better.

Exterior fixtures — corrosion is more likely, apply WD-40 or PB Blaster to the base and wait 10 minutes before twisting. Replace the gasket or weather seal after the swap to prevent recurrence.

Ceiling fan light kits — the bulb angle is awkward; remove the entire light kit if you cannot get a clean grip on the base. Most light kits release with a quarter-turn or a few thumbscrews.

Bathroom vanity fixtures — confirm the breaker is off, not just the dimmer switch, before reaching in. Dimmers can leak voltage to the socket even when off.

Cleaning Up Glass Safely
