It smells strongly for a day and wants mineral spirits cleanup. Three coats is the standard answer for tabletops, desks, and anything wet or handled; two suffices on vertical trim and low-touch furniture; floors want three of a floor-rated product. Between coats, sand lightly with 220-grit paper or a fine sanding sponge once the surface is dry — you are creating mechanical adhesion and knocking down dust nibs, not sanding through. Date your cans with a marker at first opening. When troubleshooting a finish that will not dry or level, product age is the suspect nobody checks first.
Troubleshooting the Usual Failures
Sticky finish days later means heavy coats, cold temperatures, or poly applied over uncured stain — give it warmth and a week before judging. Bubbles dried in the film get a 320-grit level-sand and one careful final coat, applied with less brushing. Fisheyes and craters point to silicone contamination from furniture polish; wipe with mineral spirits and use a fresh can. Cloudy white blush in water-based finishes signals humidity or trapped moisture — let it cure fully before intervening, as it often clears.
