Mold in Shower Drain: Causes, Cleanup, and Prevention

The black ring around a shower drain looks like dirt but is almost always biofilm: a colony of mold, bacteria, and soap residue glued to the metal flange. Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

This sequence handles most drain mold without dismantling plumbing:

  1. Remove the drain cover. Most modern shower drains use a screw or a snap-fit cover. Lift carefully and set aside on a towel.

Cleaning the P-Trap When Mold Persists

  1. Place a bucket under the trap to catch the standing water.
