Walk into a Home Depot masonry aisle and you will see two stacks of 60-pound bags that look almost identical: Quikrete Mortar Mix in the yellow bag and Quikrete Concrete Mix in the gray. Grab the wrong one for a brick wall and you have just spent $6.50 on a product that will crack out within a season. The mortar mix vs concrete mix question matters because the two products are formulated for completely different jobs: one is an adhesive that bonds masonry units, the other is a structural material that carries load on its own. Mixing them up is the single most common DIY masonry error.

The Core Difference: Aggregate Size

Concrete mix contains portland cement, sand, and coarse gravel up to 3/8 inch in diameter. The stone aggregate gives concrete compressive strength — typically 4,000 to 5,000 PSI after 28 days for standard bagged mixes like Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix. Mortar mix contains portland cement, hydrated lime, and fine masonry sand with no coarse aggregate at all. That smooth consistency lets it squeeze into 3/8-inch mortar joints between bricks without leaving voids.

Compressive strength is where the two products diverge most. Type N mortar reaches 750 PSI at 28 days. Type S hits 1,800 PSI. Type M, the strongest standard mortar, tops out at 2,500 PSI. Even the strongest mortar is roughly half the strength of bagged concrete because mortar is meant to flex with masonry units, not bear independent structural load.

When to Use Concrete Mix

Reach for concrete any time the finished material needs to stand alone and support weight. Sidewalks, driveway aprons, fence post footings, deck pier blocks, equipment pads, and slab foundations all require concrete. The IRC requires footings under exterior walls to bear on concrete with a minimum 6-inch thickness and 12-inch width in most jurisdictions.

The hydrated lime in mortar gives it the workability and water retention masons need to butter a brick and lay it without the joint drying instantly.

Pick the mortar type by application. Type N (1 part cement, 1 part lime, 6 parts sand) handles above-grade interior and exterior walls. Type S handles below-grade walls, foundations, and high-wind regions. Type M handles retaining walls and load-bearing exterior masonry. Mix Ratios and Water Content

Concrete mixes with roughly 6 to 8 pints of water per 60-pound bag. The result should look like thick oatmeal — wet enough to flow off a shovel but not soupy. Too much water reduces final compressive strength by up to 40 percent because excess water creates voids when it evaporates.

Mortar uses less water — about 5 pints per 60-pound bag — and should hold its shape on a trowel when scooped. Test workability by drawing furrows in the mortar with the edge of a trowel. The furrows should hold their shape without slumping or crumbling. Mortar that is too dry will not bond properly to brick; too wet and it squeezes out of joints under the weight of subsequent courses.

Cure Times and Working Windows

Both products reach roughly 70 percent of design strength at 7 days and 100 percent at 28 days. Cure concrete by keeping the surface damp under plastic sheeting or burlap for the first 5 to 7 days. Foot traffic is safe at 24 to 48 hours, vehicle traffic at 7 days, and full structural load at 28 days.

Mortar working time is shorter. Once mixed, you have 90 minutes to 2 hours to lay it before it stiffens beyond use. Re-tempering — adding more water after stiffening — is acceptable once for water lost to evaporation, but never after initial set has started. Brick walls and block foundations should be protected from freezing for the first 48 hours; below 40F the cure reaction slows dramatically and below 32F the water in the mix can freeze and rupture the bond.

Specialty Mixes Worth Knowing

Two other bagged products often confuse buyers. Sand mix (sometimes called topping mix) is portland cement and sand with no coarse aggregate or lime, used for thin overlays under 2 inches and for setting flagstone. Mortar mix and sand mix are not interchangeable: sand mix has no lime and will not retain water properly in mortar joints.

Refractory mortar — Rutland Castable 211 or Heat Stop 50 — is required for any joint exposed to direct flame, including fireboxes and chimney crowns. Standard Type N mortar crumbles at sustained temperatures above 500F. Refractory products handle 2,000F and run $25 to $45 per 12-pound tub.
