R30 Insulation: Attic Applications and Cost

Once insulation leaves the walls and heads overhead, the numbers jump — and R30 is where the heavy-duty tier begins. R30 insulation is the thick batt of the residential lineup: 9-1/2 inches of standard fiberglass (or a denser 8-1/4-inch version for tight rafter bays), built for attic floors, cathedral ceilings, and cold-climate floors rather than any wall cavity. It’s the code minimum for attics only in the warmest corner of the country, the cathedral-ceiling standard nearly everywhere, and the most common building block for layering up to R38 and beyond. Here’s exactly where it fits, what it costs, and how it stacks — literally — into a properly insulated attic.

Two Products Share the Name: R30 and R30C

Standard R30 fiberglass batts measure 9-1/2 inches thick at roughly R-3.2 per inch. The variant that trips people up is R30C — a high-density “cathedral” batt that packs the same R30 into 8-1/4 inches, purpose-built for 2×10 rafter bays (9-1/4 inches deep) where a vented roof assembly needs the batt plus a 1-inch air channel above it. Both come in 15-inch, 16-inch, 23-inch, and 24-inch widths, faced and unfaced, from Owens Corning, Johns Manville, CertainTeed, and Knauf. Mineral wool plays here too, with comparable-thickness batts prized in hot roofs and fire-sensitive assemblies. The buying rule: attic floors and open framing take the cheaper 9-1/2-inch product; sloped ceilings and anywhere depth is capped take R30C. And as with every batt, compression is theft — squeezing a 9-1/2-inch R30 into a 7-1/4-inch 2×8 bay leaves you with roughly R25 performance at R30 price.

Where R30 Belongs

  • Attic floors in warm climates. R30 is the ceiling-insulation code minimum only in the very warmest US zone (think South Florida and the tropics); nearly everywhere else, attics should reach R38 to R60, which makes R30 a starting layer rather than a destination.
  • Cathedral and vaulted ceilings. The marquee application. A 2×10 vented cathedral assembly takes R30C plus baffles; it’s often the most insulation that framing can physically hold without going to foam.
  • Floors over unconditioned space in cold climates. Northern-zone codes call for R30 under floors above vented crawl spaces and garages — 2×10 or deeper floor framing accepts it at full loft.
  • Layering stock. Unfaced R30 laid crosswise over an existing R19 attic layer yields roughly R49 — a common and correct cold-climate recipe.

Where it doesn’t belong: any wall (nothing residential is framed 9-1/2 inches deep) and as a stand-alone attic answer in the middle and northern climate bands.

What R30 Costs

Materials run roughly $0.90 to $1.50 per square foot — a faced batt bundle covering about 58 square feet typically sells for $60 to $80. R30C prices at the top of that range or slightly above; mineral wool equivalents add 25 to 50 percent. Installed by a contractor, batts land around $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot. Whole-project math: batting a 1,200-square-foot attic floor with R30 costs roughly $1,100 to $1,800 in materials, or $1,800 to $3,000 hired out. Reaching R38 and R49: How R30 Stacks

Layering rules are simple and unforgiving. The first layer against the ceiling drywall can be faced, paper down toward the living space; every layer above it must be unfaced, because a vapor retarder trapped mid-stack condenses moisture. Run the second layer perpendicular to the joists and over their tops — crossing the framing buries the wood’s thermal bridges, which is worth real performance. Combinations that come up constantly: R30 over existing R19 gives about R49; two crossed R19s plus an R30 top-off pushes past R60 for deep-cold attics. Depth is the honest gauge in any attic — standard fiberglass needs roughly 3 inches per R10, so an R49 attic reads about 15 to 16 inches on a ruler. If your current insulation sits below the joist tops, you have an R20-or-less attic regardless of what the original builder installed.

Cathedral Ceilings: The R30C Playbook

Sloped ceilings are where this product earns its keep and where mistakes get expensive, because a roof assembly that traps moisture rots from the inside. The standard vented recipe for 2×10 rafters: staple continuous foam or plastic baffles (AccuVent, Durovent, about $2 to $4 per 4-foot piece) against the roof deck to preserve a 1-to-2-inch air channel from soffit to ridge, then friction-fit R30C below the baffle, facing toward the room, and finish with drywall. Every bay needs its channel, and the soffit and ridge vents feeding those channels must actually be open. Skylight wells, hips, and valleys break the venting path — those areas, and any unvented (“hot roof”) design, belong to spray foam or rigid-board assemblies rather than batts. If your rafters are 2×8, don’t force the issue: R30 of any flavor won’t fit with venting, and the right answers are closed-cell foam or exterior rigid foam, not a crushed batt.

Installation Notes for the Big Batts

Thick batts handle differently. Cut them with the batt compressed under a board and a sharp utility knife — two passes beat wrestling. In attics, insulate and weatherstrip the access hatch (a chronically forgotten 10-square-foot hole in your thermal envelope), keep insulation 3 inches clear of non-IC-rated recessed lights and flues, and never block soffit vents at the eaves — install baffles there before the batts go in. Air-seal the ceiling plane first: top plates, wire and pipe penetrations, and the flue gap (sealed with metal flashing and fire-rated caulk) leak more heat than people expect, and no thickness of fiberglass stops moving air. Underfoot logistics matter too — work from boards laid across joists, wear an N95, sleeves, and gloves, and do attic work on a cool morning, not an August afternoon.

Mistakes That Waste R30 Money

Big batts invite big-batt errors. The classic is burying the eaves: pushing R30 tight into the corner where roof meets attic floor chokes off the soffit vents, and the resulting dead airflow shows up later as winter condensation or ice dams — install baffles at every eave bay before the insulation goes anywhere near them. Equally common is covering older recessed lights; non-IC-rated cans need 3 inches of clearance or, better, replacement with sealed IC-rated LED retrofits before insulating, because a buried hot can is a documented fire path. Compression sins scale up at this thickness too — R30 mashed under attic decking or ductwork loses a chunk of its rating, so frame storage platforms up on sleepers above the insulation depth rather than crushing $1.50-per-foot batts to fit under plywood.

The quieter mistakes are sequencing ones. Insulating before air-sealing locks the ceiling’s leaks under a foot of fiberglass where nobody will ever fix them. Leaving the attic hatch bare puts a hole in an otherwise strong lid. And laying a faced batt over existing insulation plants a vapor retarder mid-stack — unfaced only above the first layer. None of these cost much to avoid on install day; all of them are expensive to discover afterward.
