Getting receptacle wiring right is a matter of knowing three rules and following them exactly: black (hot) connects to the brass screw, white (neutral) connects to the silver screw, and bare copper or green (ground) connects to the green screw. Miss these assignments and you create a shock hazard that can injure a family member or, over time, burn down the house. Most residential outlets wire in under 10 minutes once the power is off, but the consequences of doing it wrong justify the extra care.
Anatomy of a Standard Receptacle
A US 15-amp or 20-amp duplex receptacle has five terminals. Two brass screws on one side accept hot wires. Two silver screws on the other side accept neutrals. A single green screw near the bottom accepts the ground. The back of most outlets also offers push-in stab connections, which electricians and most electrical inspectors discourage because they loosen over time.
Always wire using the side screws. Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire, form a clockwise loop with needle-nose pliers, hook it over the screw, and tighten. The clockwise loop ensures the screw pulls the wire tighter rather than pushing it out as you torque down.
Single Receptacle Installation
For a new outlet at the end of a circuit run, the wiring is straightforward. One cable brings power into the box: black, white, and bare ground. Connect black to brass, white to silver, ground to green. That is the whole job.
- Turn off power at the breaker
- Verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester
- Strip 3/4 inch of each wire
- Connect: black-brass, white-silver, ground-green
- Push the outlet into the box and screw it to the mounting ears
- Restore power and test
A $12 non-contact tester is the cheapest life insurance you can buy. Touch it to any wire in the box before you work. If it beeps, power is still live, and you need to find the right breaker.
Middle-of-Run Wiring
When an outlet is in the middle of a circuit, two cables enter the box: one bringing power in, one carrying power to the next outlet downstream. You have four wires plus two grounds to terminate at the receptacle.
Two approaches work. The first uses both brass and both silver screws, connecting one incoming and one outgoing to each side. The second pigtails all the hots together with a short piece of wire, all the neutrals together with another pigtail, and connects only the pigtails to the outlet. Pigtailing is cleaner and, importantly, means a failed outlet doesn’t break the circuit for everything downstream.
GFCI Requirements
Ground-fault circuit interrupter outlets are required in wet and outdoor locations by the National Electrical Code: bathrooms, kitchens within 6 feet of the sink, garages, outdoor outlets, basements, and laundry rooms. A GFCI detects tiny imbalances between hot and neutral current and cuts power within 25 milliseconds of detecting a fault.
GFCI receptacles have LINE terminals for the incoming cable and LOAD terminals that protect downstream outlets. Wiring LINE and LOAD backwards is a common DIY mistake; the outlet powers up but won’t reset or protect anything. Every GFCI comes with paper tape covering the LOAD terminals specifically to prevent this error.
Tamper-Resistant Outlets
Since 2008, the NEC requires tamper-resistant receptacles in all new residential construction. TR outlets have internal spring-loaded shutters that block foreign objects like hairpins and keys from contacting energized terminals. Both prongs must be inserted simultaneously to open the shutters.
TR outlets cost about $2 compared to $1 for standard outlets. Swapping old outlets for TR versions during any remodel is cheap insurance, especially in homes with small children.
20-Amp Circuits and Appliances
Kitchen countertop outlets, bathroom outlets, and laundry outlets must be on 20-amp circuits. A 20-amp outlet has a T-shaped neutral slot to accept both 15-amp and 20-amp plugs. The wiring is 12-gauge rather than 14-gauge, which is required for 20-amp circuits. Using 14-gauge wire on a 20-amp breaker is a code violation and a fire risk.
Refrigerators, dishwashers, and garbage disposals each need their own dedicated circuits in most jurisdictions. Piggybacking a dishwasher onto a countertop circuit trips breakers during use and violates code.
Box Fill Calculations
Every electrical box has a maximum wire count based on its cubic-inch volume. A standard single-gang plastic box at 18 cubic inches holds about 9 wires of 14-gauge or 8 wires of 12-gauge. Each device, each cable, each pigtail, and the ground bundle all count toward the limit.
Overcrowded boxes are a fire hazard and make working inside them almost impossible. If you find yourself cramming wires in, upgrade to a deeper box. Old work boxes with 22 cubic inches run $4 at any hardware store and solve the problem permanently.
Testing Before Closing Up
After wiring, plug in an outlet tester ($8 at any hardware store) to verify correct polarity and ground connection. The three-light pattern tells you immediately whether hot and neutral are reversed, whether the ground is missing, or whether the outlet is wired correctly. For GFCIs, press the test and reset buttons to confirm the breaker trips and resets properly.
Map your breakers while you have the panel open. Label each breaker with which rooms or circuits it controls. Future repairs go dramatically faster when you don’t have to hunt for the right breaker every time.
