Poured systems are highly dependent on installer skill; an inexperienced crew can leave weak spots, uneven texture, or binder failures that lead to granules coming loose, sometimes called shedding or fretting. Wet-pour playground surfacing commonly lands somewhere in the range of roughly $8 to $20 per square foot installed, climbing higher for thick fall-height cushions, custom colors, and intricate graphics. Resin-bound decorative rubber for patios and pathways often falls in a similar band. Simple interlocking rubber gym tiles or rolls for a home gym are far cheaper, frequently $2 to $8 per square foot for the material, because you install them yourself over a flat subfloor.
When you budget, remember the base is part of the job. If you need a new concrete slab or aggregate base poured first, that adds significantly to the total. My advice is to get itemized quotes that separate base prep from the rubber system, insist on a contractor with a portfolio of poured rubber work, and confirm the specified thickness meets any required safety standard for your fall heights.
It also pays to ask what happens years down the road. Poured rubber systems can often be refreshed rather than fully replaced: a worn wear course can be scarified and re-topped with fresh EPDM and binder, extending the floor’s life for a modest fraction of the original cost.
