A shower leak never announces itself — you find it six months later when a ceiling stain appears in the room below. The culprit is almost always a failed shower pan drain assembly, where the flange, weep holes, or membrane seal gave out and water bypassed the tile instead of flowing into the pipe. This guide covers the different drain types, rough-in specifications, the installation sequence that prevents leaks for decades, and how to diagnose and fix drain issues in both tile and acrylic shower pans.
The Four Main Drain Types
Shower drains fall into four categories based on the pan system they serve.
- Compression (rubber gasket) — for acrylic and fiberglass prefab pans
- Solvent-weld (PVC glue) — for tiled shower pans with PVC waterproofing
- Bonded flange (membrane-compatible) — for Schluter Kerdi and similar systems
- Linear (trench drain) — modern curbless showers, set along one wall
Each type serves a specific waterproofing method. Picking the wrong drain for your pan construction almost guarantees leaks within 5 years.
Rough-In Dimensions
Plumbers rough in shower drains to a 2 inch DWV pipe centered in the shower footprint. For a 36 by 36 inch shower, center the drain 18 inches from each wall. For a 60 by 32 inch shower stall, center on the long axis and favor one end for sloping considerations.
Drain body outer diameter runs 4-1/4 to 6 inches depending on manufacturer. The pipe stub should extend 1-1/2 to 2 inches above finished subfloor for compression drains and flush to subfloor for bonded systems. The 2-inch P-trap below the floor sits 6 to 8 inches below subfloor with a 1/4 inch per foot slope to the branch drain.
How Water Actually Drains
In a properly built tiled shower, water takes two paths to the drain. Surface water flows across the tile and grout to the center drain grate. A smaller volume penetrates the grout, hits the waterproofing membrane underneath, and flows along the sloped membrane to weep holes in the drain body. The weep holes are three small ports at the drain base that connect the membrane layer to the pipe.
Clogged weep holes are the most common cause of tile shower leaks. Grout slurry, mortar fines, or soap scum block the weeps, water pools on the membrane, and eventually finds the nearest wall penetration. Cleaning weeps is an hour-long procedure but saves thousands in floor repair downstream.
Installing a Compression Drain
Compression drains work with acrylic, fiberglass, and cultured marble prefab pans. The sequence is straightforward but unforgiving of shortcuts.
- Dry-fit the pan to verify the drain pipe aligns with the pan’s drain hole
- Apply plumber’s putty or 100 percent silicone around the drain hole on the pan underside
- Drop the drain body through the hole from above and thread the compression nut from below
- Tighten the compression nut with a drain wrench (Superior Tool 06010, $15) until the rubber gasket fully seats — about 1/2 turn past hand tight
- Set the pan onto a bed of mortar for support, with the drain aligned to the pipe
- Push the drain tailpiece into the pipe using the rubber gasket seal and tighten the pan-to-flange connection
Test by running a hose on the pan for 15 minutes before tiling the walls. Any leak at the drain shows up immediately under the pan.
Bonded Flange Drains for Tile
Systems like Schluter Kerdi, USG Durock, and Laticrete Hydro Ban use bonded flange drains that integrate the waterproofing membrane directly with the drain body. These cost $85 to $220 per drain versus $25 for a basic compression drain, but they eliminate weep-hole failures entirely.
Install by mortaring the drain body to a sloped pre-formed pan (Kerdi-Shower-T) or a traditional mud bed, bonding the membrane to the drain’s integral flange with unmodified thinset, then setting tile directly on the membrane. The entire floor above the subfloor is waterproof — no secondary weep system needed.
Linear Drains for Curbless Showers
Linear drains run along one wall of the shower, allowing a single-plane slope rather than the four-way slope of a center drain. That geometry supports curbless entries, large-format tile (12×24 and bigger), and wheelchair accessibility.
Expect $300 to $900 for the drain body (Schluter Kerdi-Line, ACO ShowerDrain, Infinity Drain). Rough-in depth increases to 3-1/2 to 5 inches below subfloor because the drain body is wide but shallow. Slope a 1/4 inch per foot from the opposite wall to the drain trough, which translates to 1 inch of drop across a typical 48 inch shower.
Common Clogs and Repairs
Hair is the leading cause of slow shower drains — it wraps around the strainer basket and catches soap film. Three levels of cleaning handle almost every clog.
- Zip-It tool or plastic drain snake ($4): pulls hair mats through the strainer without disassembly
- Remove strainer and clear with a bent coat hanger: accesses the trap weir
- Closet auger or 15 ft drum snake: reaches beyond the trap if the clog is in the branch drain

Fixing Leaks at the Drain
