Stair Measurements: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Most failed stair projects share one root cause: someone eyeballed a single dimension instead of working through the full set. Stair measurements are an interconnected system, and a 1/4-inch error on the rise compounds across 14 steps into a tripping hazard or a code violation. Whether you are framing a new deck stair, adding a basement run, or replacing a tired set of treads, getting the numbers right before the first cut saves days of rework. This guide walks through every dimension building inspectors actually check.

The Three Numbers That Matter Most

Total rise, total run, and unit rise drive everything else. Total rise is the vertical distance from finished lower floor to finished upper floor. Total run is the horizontal distance the stair occupies, measured from the face of the bottom riser to the face of the top riser. Unit rise — the height of each individual step — must fall between 4 and 7 3/4 inches under IRC 2024 (Section R311), and the variation between any two risers in a flight cannot exceed 3/8 inch.

Pull total rise with a long level and a story pole, not a tape held by hand. Hand-held tapes sag enough across an 8-foot run to throw your numbers off by 1/2 inch.

Calculating the Number of Risers

Divide total rise by the ideal unit rise of 7 inches. If your total rise is 109 inches, 109 ÷ 7 = 15.57. Round to the nearest whole number — 16 risers. Then divide back: 109 ÷ 16 = 6.81 inches per riser. That is your unit rise.

Always round the riser count, not the rise itself. A floor-to-floor of 109 inches with 15 risers gives 7.27 inches each — still legal, but steeper. With 16 risers it is gentler at 6.81. For families with kids or aging parents, choose more risers within the legal range.

Tread Depth and the Rise + Run Rule

Minimum tread depth (the part you step on) is 10 inches per IRC, and most builders target 11 inches for comfort. There is also an old carpenter’s formula that still holds: 2 risers + 1 tread should equal 24 to 25 inches. With a 6.81-inch riser, that means a tread of 10.4 to 11.4 inches. Pick 11 inches and you are inside both the code and the comfort zone.

Nosing — the rounded overhang past the riser face — must be 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch on stairs without open risers. That nosing is part of the visual tread but does not count toward the 10-inch minimum tread depth.

Headroom, Width, and Landings

Three dimensions get cited on inspections more than any others when stair measurements are off:

  • Headroom: Minimum 6 feet 8 inches measured vertically from the tread nosing to anything above (drywall, beam, joist).
  • Stair width: Minimum 36 inches between handrails on a residential stair. Cabinets, trim, and chair rail count against that 36 inches.
  • Landing depth: At least equal to the stair width — typically 36 by 36 inches at top and bottom — and a maximum drop of 1 1/2 inches from threshold to landing for exterior doors.

Skipping a top landing and dumping straight onto a hallway floor is the most common code miss in DIY basement stairs.

Stringer Layout and Total Run Math

Once you know the unit rise and tread, lay out the stringer. A 2×12 is standard; a 2×10 cannot legally hold a 10-inch tread plus nosing without exceeding the 1 1/4-inch maximum cut depth that leaves only 5 inches of stringer below the cut. Use a framing square with stair gauges set at 6.81 inches and 11 inches, and step the layout down the stringer.

Total run = (number of treads) × (tread depth). With 16 risers there are 15 treads, so 15 × 11 = 165 inches, or 13 feet 9 inches. Add 12 inches at top and bottom for landings and you need a 16-foot stair well.

Handrails and Guardrails

Handrail height is 34 to 38 inches measured vertically from the tread nosing to the top of the rail. Guardrails on open sides must hit 36 inches in residential applications, and balusters cannot allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. Returns at the top and bottom of the rail are required to keep clothing and bag straps from snagging.

Grip diameter matters too. A round handrail must be 1 1/4 to 2 inches across; non-circular profiles need a perimeter of 4 to 6 1/4 inches with no cross-section over 2 1/4 inches. The cheap pine 2×6 cap rails you see in old houses fail this test.

Checking Existing Stairs

If you are replacing treads on an existing stair, measure each riser and tread before you order materials. Older homes routinely have 1/4 to 1/2-inch variation across a flight because the original builder shimmed to land on a finished floor that is no longer there.

Measure tread depth at three points — left, center, right — because settled stringers twist over time. Order treads 1 inch wider and longer than your largest measurement, then site-cut to fit. A bullnose router bit at $25 produces a finished edge in five minutes per tread.

A digital angle finder confirms the stringer pitch is between 30 and 37 degrees — outside that range, the stair feels wrong even when the dimensions are technically legal.

Keep a story pole — a straight 2×4 marked with all your stair measurements — at the work site. It catches transposition errors that a pocket notebook will not.

Final Pre-Cut Checklist

Before the saw runs, confirm: total rise within 1/8 inch of plan, riser height calculated to three decimals, tread depth chosen, headroom verified at every point, landing dimensions framed in, and handrail blocking installed in the wall framing. Stairs cut without that checklist almost always need a second set of stringers.
