Undersize the cable feeding your range and you don’t just trip a breaker — you create a fire risk that an inspector will flag and an insurance adjuster will deny. A 50-amp aluminum feeder needs 4 AWG conductors, while the copper equivalent is 6 AWG. Aluminum is cheaper per foot — sometimes 40 percent less than copper — which is why long runs from a detached garage or addition often use aluminum SER.

Aluminum has trade-offs. The terminations require antioxidant compound and torque-rated connections, and many older outlets and breakers are not rated for aluminum at the load side. For a stove pigtail or a short branch circuit inside the home, copper NM-B is the standard choice. Save aluminum for feeders longer than 30 feet where the savings actually justify the extra labor.

Matching Wire to Breaker

The breaker protects the wire, not the appliance. That sentence trips up most DIYers. If you install a 50-amp breaker on 8-gauge wire, the wire will overheat long before the breaker trips. The pairing must follow these rules:

  1. Determine the range’s required amperage from the nameplate.
  2. Round up to the next standard breaker size (30, 40, 50, or 60 amps).
  3. Select cable that carries at least that breaker’s amperage at the 60°C column for residential NM-B.
