The water in the pit is rising, the pump is humming or completely silent, and the basement carpet is starting to darken at the edges. A sump pump not draining properly is one of the highest-stakes homeowner emergencies because every minute counts. The good news: about 70 percent of the time, the cause is one of six issues you can fix in 30 minutes with basic tools. Below is the diagnostic order I follow on every service call, plus when to stop and call a plumber.
Safety First Before Touching Anything
Before you do anything else, unplug the pump or shut off the breaker feeding the sump. Submersible pumps run on 120V and a wet basement is the worst place to discover a faulty ground.
If standing water is above your ankle and you cannot reach the breaker dry, leave the house and call an electrician or your utility. Do not wade through electrified water for any reason.
Check the Power First
About 15 percent of the no-drain calls come back to no power at the pump. Run through this list:
- Is the outlet itself live? Plug in a lamp or phone charger to confirm.
- Is the GFCI tripped? Most modern sump outlets are on a GFCI — press reset and watch the pump.
- Is the breaker tripped at the panel? Flip fully off, then back on. If it trips immediately, the pump motor is shorted and needs replacement.
- Are both prongs of the piggyback float plug fully seated in the outlet? Float and pump plugs share one outlet and can vibrate loose.
If the pump hums but does not move water, the issue is mechanical, not electrical. Move on to the next checks.
Stuck Float Switch
The float is the most common single cause of a non-draining sump. The float rises with water in the pit and triggers the motor. When it gets stuck against the pit wall, pinned by the discharge pipe, or tangled with the power cord, the pump never knows the water is rising.
- Shine a flashlight into the pit. Locate the float — it is either tethered to the side of the pump or a vertical rod with a bulb.
- If the float is jammed against the pit wall, gently rotate the entire pump 90 degrees so the float has room to rise.
- If the cord is tangled around the float arm, untangle and re-route. Use a zip tie to secure the cord to the discharge pipe.
- Lift the float by hand and listen. If the motor kicks on and water moves, you have confirmed it was stuck.
Stuck floats also fail outright after 5 to 8 years. If you lift the float and the pump does not engage, the switch is dead. A replacement Zoeller A-Pak ($45) or Superior 92681 ($35) drops in within 15 minutes on most pumps.
Clogged Check Valve or Discharge Line
The check valve sits on the discharge pipe just above the pump and prevents drained water from flowing back into the pit. When it sticks closed, the pump runs but can’t push water past it. When it sticks open, the pump cycles continuously because each batch drains back down.
Look for a 3 to 4 inch long plastic or brass valve with two rubber bands or clamps. Loosen the clamps, slide the valve off, and inspect for debris or a stuck flapper. A new universal check valve like the Zoeller 30-0181 runs $20 to $35.
If the entire discharge line is clogged with sediment or roots, you will see almost no flow even with a brand new pump. Disconnect the line at the pump and pour a gallon of water in to test. If it backs up, the line itself needs snaking or replacement.
Frozen Discharge Line in Winter
In northern climates, the discharge line exits the foundation and dumps water onto the lawn or into a buried daylight pipe. When temperatures stay below 25 degrees for several days, the standing water in that horizontal run freezes and creates a complete blockage.
Symptoms: pump runs, motor sounds normal, no water comes out the outside, water level in pit barely drops. Solutions:
- Pour hot water (not boiling) over the visible exterior pipe to thaw the closest blockage
- Run a hair dryer along the line where it exits the foundation
- Add a freeze-relief fitting like IceLoc or BurstShield ($25) to the discharge run for permanent prevention
- Slope the buried portion at 1/4 inch per foot minimum so it self-drains between cycles
If you cannot thaw the line and the pit is filling fast, run a backup discharge through a window or door using a garden hose to buy time until temperatures rise.
Impeller Jam
The impeller is the spinning fan inside the pump that moves water. Gravel, mulch, lost tools, or even a kid’s toy can drop into the pit and lock the impeller. Symptoms: pump hums loudly but no water moves, motor may trip the breaker after 30 seconds.
Unplug, lift the pump out of the pit, and flip it upside down. The impeller is visible through the intake screen at the bottom. Remove any debris with needle nose pliers. Try spinning the impeller by hand — it should move freely. If it does not budge, the motor bearings have likely seized and the pump needs replacement.
Worn Out Pump or Failed Motor
A typical 1/3 HP cast iron sump pump lasts 7 to 10 years. A 1/2 HP commercial-grade pump can run 12 to 15 years. After that, motor bearings, seals, and impellers begin to fail. Signs you have reached the end:
- Pump cycles more often than it used to even though water table is unchanged
- Rust-colored water in the discharge
- Loud grinding or rattling from the motor
- Visible cracks in the housing
