The Sprung Subfloor That Makes It Work
Drop a sheet of hardwood on a concrete slab and you build a knee-destroyer. The sprung layer underneath is what saves the dancer. The standard build, working bottom to top, looks like this:
- Vapor barrier (6 mil poly) over the slab
- 3/4 inch plywood sleepers on 16 inch centers, set on neoprene pucks 1/2 inch thick
- 5/8 inch plywood subfloor screwed perpendicular to sleepers
- 1/2 inch plywood underlayment, glued and stapled
- 3/4 inch maple or birch tongue-and-groove, blind-nailed at 6 to 8 inch centers
Total stack height runs 2 3/4 to 3 inches above slab. Plan for that when you design door swings and threshold transitions.
Portable Tap Boards for Home Practice
Not everyone is framing a sprung floor. For apartment dancers, portable tap boards measure 36 by 36 inches up to 4 by 8 feet. Look for a 3/4 inch maple top glued to a 1/2 inch closed-cell foam back. The foam isolates the impact from the floor below and reduces neighbor complaints by 15 to 25 dB compared with bare hardwood on tile. Expect to pay $120 to $180 for a 24 by 36 inch board and $350 to $600 for a 4 by 6 foot model.
Sound Transmission and Neighbor Diplomacy
Tap is loud. A 100 dB impulse at the tap head can hit 75 dB through a typical wood-framed floor-ceiling assembly. Studios in multi-tenant buildings need an STC 60 and IIC 65 assembly to avoid lease violations. Add a 1/2 inch resilient channel ceiling below the floor, lay 3 inches of mineral wool batt in the joist bay, and use neoprene isolators rated 5 to 7 Hz natural frequency under the sleepers. That stack runs about $14 per sq ft installed but it is the price of staying in a downtown loft.
Maintenance That Preserves the Tone
Sweep daily with a soft-bristle broom or microfiber mop. Avoid water-based cleaners. Bona Mega Clear in a satin sheen, recoated every 12 to 18 months, restores acoustic snap without building up the slick film you get from polyurethane gloss. Bona Sport finish is the studio-grade option and runs about $90 per gallon, covering 500 sq ft per coat.
Never wax a tap floor. Wax creates a glaze that scratches into white streaks and ruins the visual within a year. Tap heads will also slip unpredictably on wax, which is a torn ACL waiting to happen.
