Three-Way Switch Wiring: Step-by-Step Diagram and Guide

Few electrical projects frustrate homeowners more than three-way switch wiring. With three or four cables converging in a single box and no obvious logic to which wire goes where, it is easy to end up with a switch that works from one location but not the other — or worse, a tripped breaker. How a Three-Way Switch Works

A three-way switch allows you to control a single light fixture from two different locations — the top and bottom of a staircase, both ends of a hallway, or two entrances to a room. Unlike a standard single-pole switch that simply connects or disconnects one wire, a three-way switch has three terminals: one common terminal and two traveler terminals.

When you flip either switch, it redirects current between the two traveler wires. If both switches route current along the same traveler path, the circuit is complete and the light turns on. If they route along different paths, the circuit breaks and the light goes off. This toggle relationship is what lets either switch control the light independently.

Identifying the Terminals

Before touching any wires, understand what each terminal on the switch does:

  • Common terminal (black screw) — this is the most important terminal. It connects to either the power source (line) or the light fixture (load), depending on which switch you are wiring
  • Traveler terminals (brass screws) — these two terminals connect the pair of traveler wires that run between the two switches
  • Ground terminal (green screw) — connects to the bare copper or green ground wire

The common terminal is always a different color than the traveler terminals — usually black or dark copper. Identifying it correctly is the single most critical step in three-way switch wiring. Connecting a traveler wire to the common terminal (or vice versa) is the number one cause of three-way switch failures.

  • Non-contact voltage tester — essential for confirming the power is off before you work

Step-by-Step Wiring Instructions

These instructions assume a standard configuration where power enters at the first switch box, travels to the second switch box via a 3-wire cable, and then continues to the light fixture.

Step 1: Turn Off Power

Switch off the circuit breaker controlling the circuit. Verify power is dead at both switch boxes using a non-contact voltage tester. Test every wire in the box — not just the ones you think are on this circuit. Adjacent circuits may share the same box.

Step 2: Wire the First Switch (Power Side)

  1. Connect the incoming hot wire (black from the power source cable) to the common terminal (black screw)
  2. Connect the two traveler wires (typically red and black from the 3-wire cable going to the second switch) to the two traveler terminals (brass screws)
  3. Connect the neutral wires (white) together with a wire nut — they pass through this box but do not connect to the switch
  4. Connect all ground wires together and pigtail one to the green screw on the switch

Step 3: Wire the Second Switch (Load Side)

  1. Connect the black wire going to the light fixture to the common terminal (black screw)
  2. Connect the two traveler wires (red and black from the 3-wire cable coming from the first switch) to the two traveler terminals (brass screws)
  3. Connect the neutral wires (white) together with a wire nut
  4. Connect all ground wires together and pigtail one to the green screw

Step 4: Test

Restore power at the breaker. Test both switches — the light should turn on and off from either location. If flipping one switch works but the other does not, the traveler wires are likely swapped on one of the switches.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

When three-way switch wiring goes wrong, the symptoms point directly to the cause:

  • Light works from one switch but not the other — traveler wires are swapped on one switch, or a traveler is connected to the common terminal
  • Light stays on regardless of switch position — a hot wire is connected directly to a traveler terminal, bypassing the switching mechanism
  • Light does not work from either switch — check for a loose connection, a tripped breaker, or a burned-out bulb before re-examining wiring
  • Breaker trips when switch is flipped — a hot wire is shorting to neutral or ground, likely from stripped insulation contacting the metal box

Using Smart Switches in a Three-Way Setup

Smart switches like Lutron Caseta, TP-Link Kasa, and GE Cync work in three-way configurations but require specific companion switches or add-on modules at the second location. You cannot simply install two smart switches — one must be the primary and the other a paired remote.
