Tile and grout are not waterproof, and neither is the wall behind them unless you build it that way. Choosing the right tile backer board for shower walls is the decision that determines whether your remodel lasts thirty years or grows black mold behind the tile in five. Drywall, even the green moisture-resistant kind, has no business inside a shower; the real choices are cement board, fiber cement board, and foam board, each with different costs, weights, and waterproofing requirements. The most expensive mistake in this category is assuming any of them is waterproof on its own, so let’s sort the classes out properly.

Why Regular Drywall Fails in Showers

Gypsum core plus paper facing equals mold food the moment vapor gets past the grout, and vapor always gets past the grout. Green board and purple board resist incidental humidity in bathrooms, and code and tile-industry standards (TCNA) still exclude them from wet areas like shower surrounds. Backer boards solve the problem two ways: cementitious boards are simply unharmed by water, and foam boards stop water outright. Every legitimate shower wall assembly starts with one of these classes over the studs.

Class 1: Cement Board (Durock, WonderBoard, PermaBase)

Cement board is the traditional workhorse: a slab of Portland cement and aggregate sandwiched in fiberglass mesh, sold in 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch thicknesses, typically 3×5 ft sheets. USG Durock, Custom Building Products WonderBoard, and National Gypsum PermaBase are the names on the shelf.

  • Cost: about $12 to $18 per 3×5 sheet, the cheapest backer per square foot.
  • Strengths: unaffected by water, extremely strong bond surface for thinset, forgiving of clumsy handling, decades of proven service.
  • Weaknesses: heavy (a 1/2 inch 3×5 sheet runs about 45 to 50 pounds), dusty to cut (score-and-snap or a carbide blade, and wear a respirator, the silica dust is not a joke), and, critically, not waterproof. Water passes through cement board without damaging it, then soaks the studs behind.

The non-negotiable detail: cement board in a shower requires a waterproofing layer, either a membrane behind it (6-mil poly or felt lapped into the pan) or, better by current practice, a liquid-applied membrane like RedGard or Hydro Ban ($50 to $90 per gallon, two coats, roughly a gallon per shower) or a sheet membrane like Schluter KERDI ($1.50 to $2.50 per sq ft) applied over the face. Skipping this step is the most common catastrophic error in DIY showers.

Class 2: Fiber Cement Board (HardieBacker)

James Hardie’s HardieBacker dominates this class: cement blended with cellulose fiber into a denser, smoother, lighter sheet than mesh-faced cement board. It cuts cleaner, snaps more predictably, and its smooth face makes fastener heads sit flush.

  • Cost: about $15 to $22 per 3×5 sheet.
  • Strengths: easier handling and cutting than cement board, excellent tile bond, widely available, and the 500-pound gorilla of contractor familiarity.
  • Weaknesses: same waterproofing requirement as cement board, the cellulose content means you genuinely do not want it staying saturated, so membrane discipline matters just as much. HardieBacker’s own instructions require a waterproofing barrier in showers.

Functionally, treat fiber cement as cement board with better manners: same assemblies, same membranes, slightly nicer install day.

Class 3: Foam Backer Board (KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, GoBoard, Hydro Ban Board)

The modern class: extruded or expanded polystyrene panels faced with cement coatings or fleece, engineered to be inherently waterproof. Schluter KERDI-BOARD, Wedi Building Panel, Johns Manville GoBoard, and Laticrete Hydro Ban Board lead the market.

  • Cost: roughly $40 to $80 per equivalent 3×5 area, three to five times cement board.
  • Strengths: the board itself is waterproof, so once you seal the seams and fastener points with the system’s banding or sealant, the wall is done, no separate membrane step. Feather-light (a 1/2 inch panel weighs a few pounds), cuts silently with a utility knife, no silica dust, and large 4×8 panels reduce seams. System warranties cover the whole assembly.
  • Weaknesses: price, softer faces that can dent before tiling, and brand-specific seam treatments you must actually follow. Screws need the system’s washers to seal penetrations.

For DIYers, foam board’s real selling point is error reduction: the waterproofing is the board, not a separate skill-dependent coating step.

Head-to-Head: Choosing by Situation

  • Tight budget, willing to do membrane work: cement board plus RedGard. Total wall cost for a typical 3-wall alcove (about 100 sq ft): $150 to $250. Cheapest correct shower there is.
  • Standard remodel with a contractor: HardieBacker plus liquid or sheet membrane, the industry default, $180 to $350 for the same alcove.
  • DIY with maximum fail-safety, or upstairs bathrooms where leaks are expensive: foam board system, $400 to $800 in wall materials, hours faster and far harder to get wrong.
  • Steam showers: foam board or KERDI over the entire enclosure including the ceiling; vapor management rules tighten and system assemblies shine here.

Installation Rules That Apply to Every Class

  1. Use 1/2 inch board on studs 16 inches on center; 1/4 inch board is for floors and countertops, not walls.
  2. Fasten with the board maker’s corrosion-resistant screws, not drywall screws, which rust and pop.
  3. Keep the board 1/4 inch off the pan or tub flange and silicone that gap; boards must never wick standing water.
  4. Tape cementitious seams with alkali-resistant mesh and thinset, never drywall joint tape and compound.
  5. Treat every penetration, valve, spout, niche, as a waterproofing detail, not an afterthought.
  6. Flood-test or spray-test what you can before tile hides everything.

Vapor Barriers: One Layer, Never Two

The rule that confuses more DIYers than any other: a shower wall gets exactly one waterproofing plane, never two. If you staple poly sheeting behind the cement board, do not also coat the face with RedGard; if you membrane the face, skip the poly behind. Two vapor-impermeable layers create a moisture sandwich, any vapor that gets between them (and some always does) has no way to dry, and the assembly molds from the inside. Face-applied membranes have become the preferred practice precisely because they keep water out of the board entirely and dry to the room side. Foam boards sidestep the question, since the board is the single barrier by design. The related detail: in showers, do not tape and mud board seams with drywall compound “for smoothness” before membraning. Thinset and mesh under the membrane, or the system’s sealant at foam seams, is the entire finish the wall needs before tile.

Bottom Line

Any of the three classes builds an excellent shower; none of them does it alone. Pick cement board or HardieBacker when budget leads and commit to the membrane step like your subfloor depends on it, because it does. Pick a foam system like KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, or GoBoard when you want the waterproofing engineered into the tile backer board for shower walls and are happy to pay for the insurance. The only wrong answers are green board behind tile and bare cement board with no membrane, and both mistakes announce themselves the same way: a musty smell and a spongy wall, a few years too late to fix cheaply.
