  3. Fasten with backer board screws every 8 inches across the field and every 6 inches along the edges. Keep screws at least 3/8 inch from the edge and 2 inches from corners.
  4. Tape all seams with alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape and skim a thin layer of thinset over the tape, feathering the edges smooth.
  5. Allow the thinset to cure for at least 24 hours before proceeding.

Mixing Thinset

Follow the manufacturer’s mixing ratio exactly. Add powder to water (not the other way around) and mix with a drill and paddle until the consistency resembles smooth peanut butter. Let the mixture slake (rest) for 5-10 minutes, then remix briefly without adding more water. Properly mixed thinset should hold ridges from the notched trowel without slumping.

Spreading Thinset

Spread thinset using the flat side of your notched trowel, pressing it firmly into the substrate. Then comb through it with the notched side, holding the trowel at a consistent 45-degree angle. Work in small sections (about 3-4 square feet at a time) so the thinset does not skin over before you set tiles. In a bathroom, you typically have 15-20 minutes of working time depending on temperature and humidity.

Step 6: Set the Tiles

With your layout planned and thinset spread, it is time to start setting tiles. Work from the center of the room outward toward the walls, following your chalk lines.

  1. Press each tile firmly into the thinset with a slight twisting motion to collapse the trowel ridges and achieve full contact.

Remove the toilet before tiling. The tile should extend under the toilet and up to the flange. Do not walk on freshly set tiles. Allow the thinset to cure for at least 24 hours before grouting. In cooler or more humid conditions, extend this to 48 hours. Walking on tiles before the thinset has cured can shift them and break the bond.

  3. Spread grout diagonally across the joints using a rubber grout float, pressing firmly to pack the joints completely.
  4. Work in small sections, about 10-15 square feet at a time.
  5. After spreading, hold the float at a steep angle (nearly 90 degrees) and scrape excess grout off the tile surface, moving diagonally to avoid pulling grout from the joints.
  6. Wait 15-20 minutes for the grout to begin to firm up, then wipe the tiles with a damp (not wet) sponge. Rinse the sponge frequently. Two or three passes should remove the haze.

Where the floor meets walls, the tub, the shower curb, or the toilet base, use color-matched silicone caulk instead of grout. These are movement joints, and rigid grout will crack as the materials expand and contract. Silicone remains flexible and maintains a watertight seal.

Step 9: Seal the Grout

If you used cement-based grout (sanded or unsanded), apply a penetrating grout sealer after the grout has fully cured, typically 48-72 hours. Grout is porous and will absorb water, soap, and stains without sealer. Apply with a small brush or applicator bottle, wipe off excess, and reapply annually in heavy-use bathrooms. If you used epoxy grout, sealing is not necessary.

Step 10: Reinstall the Toilet and Finish Up

Once the grout is sealed and fully cured, reinstall the toilet with a new wax ring. You may need longer closet bolts or a flange extender because the new tile has raised the floor height. Tighten the bolts evenly, alternating sides, until the toilet is snug. Do not overtighten or you risk cracking the porcelain base.
