A toilet that runs intermittently or fills too high wastes roughly 200 gallons of water per day — about $50 a month on a typical utility bill. A simple toilet fill valve adjustment takes ten minutes and fixes the issue without a plumber call, a new toilet, or any tools beyond what is already in a kitchen drawer. Identify Which Fill Valve You Have
Pop the tank lid carefully and rest it on a towel. Inside, the fill valve is the vertical assembly on the left side of the tank, connected to the water supply line below. Three designs dominate North American toilets.
- Float ball with brass arm (older toilets): Plastic or copper ball on the end of a horizontal arm, riding on top of the water.
- Cup-style float (modern toilets): Cylindrical float surrounding the fill valve, sliding up and down on the valve shaft. Fluidmaster and Korky make the most common designs.
- Tower float with adjusting screw: A vertical tower with a float that slides up the side, common on newer Kohler and American Standard models.
The fix differs slightly for each style. Identify which you have before turning any screws.
What the Water Level Should Be
Most toilets have a fill line marked inside the tank — usually a stamped “WL” or molded ridge about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. If you cannot see a mark, the rule of thumb is the water level should sit 1 inch below the overflow tube top.
Too high and water trickles into the overflow tube continuously, costing money and making that ghost-flush sound every few minutes. Too low and the flush is weak, requiring multiple flushes to clear the bowl.
Adjusting a Cup-Style Fluidmaster Valve
The Fluidmaster 400A and 400CR are the most common fill valves in US homes, found on roughly 70 percent of toilets. They use a vertical adjustment rod attached to the cup float.
- Locate the adjustment rod connecting the cup float to the top of the fill valve.
- Squeeze the spring clip on the side of the rod or pinch the adjustment clip.
- Slide the float down to lower the water level, or up to raise it.
- Adjust in small increments — about 1/2 inch at a time.
- Flush and let the tank refill to test the new level.
Newer Fluidmaster 400H Performax models use a thumb screw on top of the fill valve. Turn clockwise to raise the water level, counterclockwise to lower. One full turn equals roughly 1/4 inch of water level change.
Adjusting a Korky QuietFill Valve
Korky valves use a slightly different adjustment mechanism. The tower has a sliding sleeve with a locking clip at the top.
Pinch the clip on top of the float and slide the whole float assembly up or down on the central tower. Some Korky models also have a fine-tune screw at the top of the valve — a small Phillips head adjustment that fine-tunes by quarter-inch increments. Test after each adjustment by flushing.
Adjusting an Old-Style Float Ball
If your toilet has a brass or plastic float ball on a horizontal arm, the adjustment is even simpler.
Gently bend the brass arm downward to lower the water level or upward to raise it. Newer plastic arms have an adjustment screw at the valve end — turn clockwise to raise the float and water level, counterclockwise to lower. Older brass arms are forgiving up to about 1/2 inch of bending, but excessive force will crack the float ball connection.
Common Problems Beyond Simple Adjustment
If adjusting the float does not fix the running, the valve itself may be worn. Watch the tank refill closely after a flush.
- Valve runs continuously: Float is set too high or the fill valve seal is leaking. Replace the seal kit ($4 to $8) before replacing the whole valve.
- Water trickles into the overflow tube: Float is set too high. Lower the adjustment.
- Slow tank fill (over 90 seconds): Debris in the supply line or a clogged fill valve cap. Shut off supply, lift the cap, and rinse.
- Phantom flushing every few minutes: Flapper leak in the flush valve, not the fill valve. Replace the flapper instead.
- Water hammer or banging on fill: Float arrives too quickly. Some valves have a flow-rate adjustment on the supply side.
Replacing the Fill Valve When Adjustment Fails
Fill valves typically last 5 to 8 years before the internal diaphragm hardens or the seat wears. If you have adjusted and still have problems, replacement runs $10 to $18 for the valve and 20 minutes of work.
Shut off the supply at the toilet, flush to drain the tank, hold a small bucket under the supply line, then disconnect the supply nut. Unscrew the lock nut under the tank and lift the old valve out. The new valve drops in, the lock nut tightens hand-tight plus a quarter turn with channel locks, and the supply reconnects. Adjust the height of the new valve so the top is at least 1 inch above the overflow tube.
Tools You Actually Need
This is one of the few plumbing jobs that requires basically nothing.
- Channel-lock pliers: For the supply nut and lock nut on full valve replacement.
- Adjustable wrench: Optional backup if the lock nut is stiff.
- Old towel: Catches drips when disconnecting the supply.
- Small bucket: For any residual water in the supply line.
- Phillips screwdriver: If your valve uses a fine-tune adjustment screw.
No torch, no pipe dope, no compound. Modern fill valves use compression fittings and rubber seals that need only hand-tight torque.
Testing After Adjustment
Flush the toilet and watch the tank carefully. The water should fill to about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube and shut off cleanly without trickling. The fill cycle should complete in 45 to 75 seconds depending on supply pressure.
Listen for 15 seconds after the fill completes. If you hear any ongoing water sound — even a faint hiss — the valve is not seating properly. Repeat the adjustment or check the seal. If the tank fills, shuts off, then refills 60 seconds later without anyone flushing, the problem is the flush valve flapper leaking back into the bowl, not the fill valve. Replace the flapper.
Annual Maintenance Pays Off
Once a year, lift the tank lid and check the water level against the fill line. Run a fingernail across the flapper seal and the fill valve cap. If you feel mineral buildup, soak both in white vinegar overnight to dissolve the scale. Fifteen minutes of annual maintenance prevents the $400 plumber call and keeps your water bill predictable.
