That hissing sound coming from your bathroom at 2 AM is almost always a failing toilet float valve. This small mechanism controls when water enters the tank and when it stops. When it works correctly, you never think about it. When it fails, your toilet runs constantly, wasting up to 200 gallons of water per day and adding $30 to $50 per month to your utility bill. The good news is that diagnosing and replacing a toilet float valve is one of the easiest plumbing repairs a homeowner can tackle.
How a Toilet Float Valve Works
Every toilet tank has two main valves: the flush valve (the flapper at the bottom that releases water into the bowl) and the fill valve, commonly called the float valve. The float valve controls the water supply entering the tank after each flush.
When you flush, the tank empties and the float drops to its lowest position. This drop opens the fill valve, allowing fresh water to flow into the tank through the supply line. As the tank fills, the float rises with the water level. When the float reaches a preset height, it triggers the valve to close, stopping the flow of water. The entire fill cycle takes 45 to 90 seconds on most toilets.
Types of Toilet Float Valves
There are three common float valve designs found in residential toilets. Knowing which type you have helps when shopping for replacements.
Ball Float Valve (Ballcock)
The traditional design features a hollow plastic or brass ball attached to a metal or plastic arm that pivots on the top of the fill valve. As water rises, the ball floats up, lifting the arm and pushing a plunger or diaphragm to close the valve. These were standard in toilets made before the early 2000s. Replacement ball float assemblies cost $8 to $15.
Cup Float Valve
Modern toilets use a cylindrical cup that slides up and down a vertical shaft. As water rises, the cup floats upward along the shaft and closes the valve at the top. Fluidmaster 400A ($8 to $12) is the most widely used cup-style toilet float valve in the United States and fits nearly every standard toilet. This design is quieter and more reliable than the old ballcock style.
Internal Float Valve
Some newer fill valves have the float mechanism completely enclosed inside the valve body. Korky QuietFill ($10 to $15) is a popular example. These are the quietest option and the least likely to develop issues, but they cost slightly more than exposed float designs.
Common Float Valve Problems
Most toilet float valve issues fall into a handful of categories, and each has telltale signs.
- Toilet runs constantly: The float is not rising high enough to close the valve, or the valve seal is worn and leaking. This is the most common symptom of a failing float valve
- Toilet runs intermittently (phantom flushing): The float valve closes but then slowly leaks, allowing the tank to drain slightly before the valve kicks on again to refill. This cycling can repeat every 10 to 30 minutes
- Tank fills too slowly: Mineral deposits or debris inside the valve restrict water flow. This is especially common in areas with hard water
- Tank overfills: The float is set too high, causing water to rise above the overflow tube and drain continuously into the bowl. Adjust the float height first before replacing the valve
- Noisy filling: Worn washers, high water pressure, or a failing diaphragm inside the valve can cause whistling, humming, or banging during the fill cycle
Adjusting the Float Height
Before replacing anything, try adjusting the float. Many running-toilet issues are simply a matter of the water level being set too high or too low.
On a ball float, bend the metal arm downward slightly to lower the water level, or upward to raise it. On a cup float, locate the adjustment screw or clip on the side of the float mechanism. Turn the screw clockwise to lower the water level or counterclockwise to raise it. On a Fluidmaster 400A, squeeze the stainless steel clip on the adjustment rod and slide the float cup down to reduce the water level.
The correct water level is approximately 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. Mark this level with a pencil on the inside of the tank, flush, and watch to see if the water stops at your mark.
How to Replace a Toilet Float Valve
If adjusting does not solve the problem, replacement is the next step. This takes 15 to 30 minutes and requires no special tools beyond an adjustable wrench and a towel.
- Shut off the water supply: Turn the shut-off valve behind the toilet clockwise until it stops. Flush the toilet and hold the handle down to drain as much water as possible from the tank
- Disconnect the supply line: Place a towel under the connection. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the coupling nut where the supply line meets the bottom of the tank. Some remaining water will drain out
- Remove the old valve: Inside the tank, the fill valve is secured by a large plastic locknut on the outside bottom of the tank. Unscrew it by hand or with channel-lock pliers. Lift the old valve straight up and out
- Adjust the new valve height: Most replacement valves are adjustable. Set the height so the critical level mark (CL) on the valve is at least 1 inch above the overflow tube
- Install the new valve: Insert the valve through the tank hole, hand-tighten the locknut from the outside, then snug it an additional quarter turn with pliers. Do not overtighten or you risk cracking the porcelain
- Reconnect the supply line: Tighten the coupling nut hand-tight, then a quarter turn more with a wrench
- Attach the refill tube: Clip the small refill tube from the fill valve to the top of the overflow tube. This tube directs a small stream of water into the bowl during refill to restore the trap seal
- Turn on the water and test: Open the supply valve slowly and let the tank fill. Check for leaks at the base of the valve and the supply connection. Adjust the float to set the correct water level
When to Replace vs. Repair
Individual components inside a float valve, such as washers, diaphragms, and seals, can be replaced separately. Repair kits cost $3 to $6. However, given that an entire new toilet float valve costs $8 to $15 and takes the same amount of time to install, most plumbers and experienced DIYers recommend full replacement over repair. A new valve comes with all-new seals, a new float mechanism, and a fresh refill tube, eliminating multiple potential failure points at once.
If your toilet is more than 10 years old and has never had the fill valve replaced, proactive replacement before a failure saves you from the water waste and potential water damage that comes with a valve that fails while you are away from home. Consider replacing the flapper at the same time for another $5 to $8. Together, a new fill valve and flapper essentially rebuild the entire tank mechanism for under $25.
