Transition Strips for Flooring: Types, Sizes, and Install Tips

That awkward gap where your kitchen tile meets the living room hardwood does not have to look like a mistake. Transition strips for flooring bridge the gap between two different surfaces, cover expansion joints, and prevent tripping hazards at doorways. They are one of the most overlooked details in a flooring project, but skipping them or choosing the wrong type leaves a visibly unfinished result.

Why You Need Transition Strips

Transition strips serve three purposes. First, they cover the required expansion gap that floating floors need along their perimeter (typically 1/4 inch). Without a strip, that gap is visible and collects dirt. Second, they smooth the height difference between two flooring surfaces that are not the same thickness. A 12mm laminate next to a 3mm vinyl tile creates a 9mm step that catches toes and chair casters. Third, they protect exposed plank edges from chipping, cracking, and moisture intrusion.

Types of Transition Strips

Each type handles a specific flooring situation. Using the wrong one creates problems instead of solving them.

T-Molding

T-molding is the most common transition strip. Its cross-section looks like an upside-down T, with a flat top that bridges two floors of equal or near-equal height. Use T-molding where LVP meets laminate, hardwood meets hardwood, or any two floating floors meet at a doorway. Standard T-moldings handle height differences up to about 2mm.

Reducer

A reducer transitions from a thicker floor to a thinner one. One edge sits flush on the higher floor while the other slopes down to meet the lower surface. This is the strip you need when hardwood (typically 3/4 inch thick) meets tile (3/8 inch installed height) or when any two floors have a noticeable height difference.

End Cap (End Molding)

End caps cover the exposed edge of a floating floor where it meets a different surface that does not need a transition, like a fireplace hearth, sliding door track, or carpet. One side ramps down from the floor height to the subfloor level.

Carpet Transition (Baby Threshold)

This Z-shaped metal strip tucks under carpet on one side and overlaps a hard-surface floor on the other. It is the standard solution where carpet meets tile, vinyl, or hardwood at a doorway.

Stair Nosing

Stair nosing wraps over the front edge of a stair tread covered in floating flooring. It provides a rounded, non-slip edge and is required by building codes for safety on open stair edges.

Materials and Price Ranges

Transition strips come in several materials, each with trade-offs between appearance, durability, and cost.

  • Solid hardwood: $8-$20 per linear foot. Matches hardwood flooring perfectly. Available pre-finished to coordinate with major brands like Bruce, Shaw, and Mohawk.
  • Laminate/vinyl: $3-$8 per linear foot. Color-matched to specific flooring lines. The most common option for LVP and laminate installations.
  • Metal (aluminum): $2-$6 per linear foot. Extremely durable and suitable for commercial use. Available in silver, gold, bronze, and matte black finishes.
  • Rubber: $1-$3 per linear foot. Flexible, quiet, and affordable. Works well in basements and utility areas.

A standard 36-inch doorway needs one transition strip, so material cost per doorway ranges from about $3 to $20 depending on material choice.

How to Install Transition Strips

Installation methods vary by strip type, but most use one of two approaches: a track system or direct adhesive.

Track-Mount Installation

  1. Screw or nail the metal track (included with most strips) into the subfloor, centered in the gap between the two floors.
  2. Cut the transition strip to length using a miter saw for wood or laminate, or tin snips for metal.
  3. Snap the strip onto the track. It clicks into a channel that holds it firmly without visible fasteners.

Adhesive Installation

  1. Apply construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails) to the bottom of the strip or directly into the gap.
  2. Press the strip into place and weight it down for 24 hours while the adhesive cures.
  3. Adhesive installation works over concrete subfloors where screwing into the slab is impractical.

For either method, leave the expansion gap specified by your flooring manufacturer between the flooring edge and the transition strip. The strip covers the gap but should not pinch the floating floor, or it will buckle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wrong strip type: Using a T-molding where a reducer is needed leaves a raised lip that catches feet. Match the strip to the actual height difference.
  • Too tight: Pressing the strip against the floating floor edge eliminates the expansion gap. Leave at least 1/8 inch on each side.
  • Poor color match: Buy transition strips for flooring from the same manufacturer as your floor whenever possible. Generic strips in a close-but-not-quite shade look worse than a clean metal strip in a neutral finish.
  • Skipping them entirely: Exposed expansion gaps collect debris, allow moisture intrusion, and make the installation look incomplete.

Where to Place Transition Strips

Install transitions at every doorway where two different floor types meet, wherever a floating floor meets a fixed surface like tile or stone, and at the top and bottom of stairs when using stair nosing. Building codes also require transitions at certain thresholds for ADA compliance in commercial buildings. In residential homes, center the strip directly under the closed door so the transition is hidden when the door is shut. This simple placement trick makes the most professional-looking result with minimal effort.
