Look inside the wall of any well-built home from the last 60 years and you will find copper water lines, almost always type L copper pipe for pressurized supply runs. The color-coded blue label has become the quiet gold standard of American plumbing: thick enough to handle soil contact, thin enough to solder cleanly, and rated for the 80 to 150 psi that residential water systems routinely run at. PEX has stolen some ground in the last 15 years, but copper remains the material specified for anything the homeowner wants to last 75+ years without replacement. Understanding the type differences, sizing rules, and installation basics lets you plan a DIY project with confidence or catch a contractor who is trying to cut costs with the wrong product.
Copper Pipe Types Explained
Copper water pipe ships in four wall thicknesses, each color-coded on the label. Type K (green label) has the thickest walls and is used underground for water service mains. Type L (blue label) is the standard for residential and light commercial water supply. Type M (red label) has thinner walls and is often used by budget builders for interior supply runs. Type DWV (yellow label) is even thinner, for drain, waste, and vent only, not pressurized supply.
All types share the same outer diameter for a given nominal size, which means they use the same fittings. The difference is wall thickness, which affects pressure rating, corrosion resistance, and useful service life.
Why Type L Is the Residential Standard
Type L copper has a wall thickness of 0.040 to 0.080 inches depending on diameter, offering a pressure rating of 500 to 1,000 psi at 100°F. This exceeds residential needs by a factor of five, giving the pipe long life even as water chemistry slowly thins the wall over decades. Most plumbing inspectors will pass Type M for interior use, but Type L is specified by serious builders because the additional wall thickness tolerates aggressive water, high velocity, and thermal cycling better.
Expect 75+ years of service from Type L in typical municipal water. Type M usually lasts 40 to 60 years before pinhole leaks begin. The price difference is modest: Type L runs roughly 20 to 30 percent more per foot than Type M.
Common Sizes and Uses
Residential plumbing uses five sizes for water supply. Half-inch Type L handles individual fixtures (a single sink, toilet, or shower) at up to 30 psi pressure drop per 100 feet. Three-quarter-inch is the standard for main trunk lines feeding multiple fixtures and for water heaters. One-inch is used for main supply lines entering the house and for manifold-style distribution systems.
One-and-one-quarter and one-and-one-half-inch Type L appear in larger homes or irrigation runs. Expect roughly $3.50 to $5.50 per foot for half-inch, $5.00 to $7.50 for three-quarter-inch, and $8.00 to $12.00 for one-inch pipe at current copper prices.
Soldering Fundamentals
Joining copper pipe is sometimes called sweating, and it relies on capillary action drawing molten solder into the joint. The process has five steps: cut, clean, flux, heat, and apply solder. A clean square cut with a tubing cutter is essential; hacksaws leave burrs that disrupt capillary flow.
Clean the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the fitting with emery cloth or a wire brush until bright copper shows. Apply a thin coat of tinning flux to both surfaces. Assemble the joint, then heat the fitting (not the pipe) with a propane or MAPP torch until flux sizzles and smokes. Touch the solder wire to the joint; it should melt and wick into the gap all the way around.
Press Fittings as an Alternative
ProPress and similar press-fit systems eliminate soldering entirely. A specialized tool compresses a stainless steel ring inside a copper fitting with an O-ring, creating a permanent joint in under 10 seconds. Expect $12 to $35 per fitting versus $2 to $6 for sweat fittings, but the labor savings often offset the fitting cost on large jobs.
Press fittings also eliminate open-flame work, which matters in finished spaces, wood-framed walls, and commercial buildings with fire watch requirements. Milwaukee, Ridgid, and DeWalt all make battery-powered press tools in the $1,500 to $3,000 range. For most DIY work, renting the tool at $75 to $150 per day makes financial sense on projects under 20 joints.
Cutting and Deburring
A tubing cutter produces the cleanest cut. The Ridgid 101 mini-cutter at $20 fits in tight spaces, while the Ridgid 103 full-size cutter at $45 handles larger runs. Cutting wheels wear out after 200 to 400 cuts; a spare wheel at $8 to $12 is cheap insurance.

Supporting and Insulating the Pipe
Horizontal copper runs require support every 6 feet for half-inch pipe, 8 feet for three-quarter-inch, and 10 feet for one-inch. Vertical runs need support at each floor penetration. Use copper-plated hangers or plastic-coated straps; steel straps in direct contact with copper cause galvanic corrosion.
Insulation matters both for heat conservation on hot water lines and for freeze protection on cold lines in unheated spaces. Half-inch-wall foam pipe insulation runs $1 to $2 per foot and is standard in all new work. In garages, crawlspaces, and attics, use heavier three-quarter-inch insulation.
When to Choose PEX Instead
PEX has real advantages for new construction: lower material cost, flexibility that eliminates many fittings, and freeze resistance due to slight expansion under pressure. PEX runs $0.40 to $0.80 per foot for half-inch versus $3.50 to $5.50 for Type L copper.
Copper remains the better choice for exposed runs, water heater connections (the last 18 inches where heat radiates), high-use applications where UV or rodent damage is a risk, and anywhere homeowners want resale-friendly visible plumbing. A mix-and-match approach (PEX for long horizontal runs, Type L copper for visible connections) is common in well-built remodels.
Mistakes to Avoid
Do not use Type M for main supply lines or underground work. Do not mix solder types on the same joint. Do not overheat the joint; copper turns dark and brittle above 900°F. Do not pressurize the system until solder joints are fully cool; molten solder rushes out and leaks surface. Do not connect copper directly to galvanized steel without a dielectric union; the galvanic reaction corrodes both metals quickly.
