The standard placements work because they account for actual cooking workflow. Refrigerator first because food enters there. Sink in the middle because washing happens between gathering and cooking. Range last because that is where heat is applied. Reverse the sequence for left-handed cooks if it feels more natural.
Counter Space Is the Real Win
A U kitchen with 12 feet on each side wall and 12 feet across the back delivers about 32 linear feet of countertop minus the appliance breaks, or roughly 50 to 60 square feet of usable counter. Compare that to an L-shape of the same room footprint, which delivers 30 to 40 square feet, and the U-shape gives you 50 percent more landing space. Storage Density Beats Every Other Layout
Three walls of cabinets means three walls of storage. Lazy Susan corner cabinets use rotating round shelves to bring contents to the front. A 36×36 corner with a Susan holds about 55 percent of the available volume in usable storage.

First, placing the dishwasher in a corner. The open dishwasher door blocks the perpendicular cabinet, and you cannot stand at the dishwasher and load it while the door is open against the corner. Always put the dishwasher next to the sink with at least 21 inches of clear space on the open-door side.
Second, skipping the sink window. The U-shape begs for a window over the back-wall sink because that is where the cook spends the most time. A blank wall over the sink in a U kitchen feels claustrophobic.
Third, running cabinets all the way to the open end of the U without a return. Tall cabinets at the open ends of the U define the kitchen visually and provide pantry space; ending with a base cabinet only feels unfinished.

When to Choose a U-Shape
The layout makes sense in three situations. First, when the room is already proportioned for it; converting a square or near-square kitchen room into a U-shape is the natural fit. Second, when one or more household members cooks seriously and wants three distinct work zones (prep, cleanup, cooking). Third, when you need maximum storage in a moderate footprint and an island is not desired or possible.
