Ultralight Drywall: Complete Guide for Homeowners

A standard 4×12 sheet of half-inch drywall weighs about 75 pounds. A 4×12 sheet of ultralight drywall weighs 53 pounds. That 22-pound difference does not sound like much until you carry 30 sheets up a flight of stairs by yourself. Ultralight drywall has become the default choice for DIY remodels, ceiling installations, and any job where one person needs to maneuver full sheets. The performance tradeoffs are minimal for most residential applications, but they exist.

How Ultralight Drywall Is Made

USG Sheetrock UltraLight, CertainTeed Easi-Lite, and Georgia-Pacific ToughRock Lite-Weight all use a proprietary gypsum core with reduced density. The core contains the same calcium sulfate dihydrate as standard drywall but with a foamed structure that reduces weight while maintaining structural integrity. When Standard Drywall Still Wins

Ultralight is not bulletproof. The reduced-density core dents and damages more easily than standard drywall during shipping and rough handling. For high-traffic walls in mudrooms, garage interiors, or commercial-style residential spaces where impact resistance matters, standard half-inch or even 5/8 inch high-impact board offers better long-term durability.

Type X fire-rated drywall is rarely available in ultralight form. If your project requires Type X for garage walls per IRC R302.6 or for utility room ceilings under living space, you will use standard 5/8 inch Type X. The few ultralight Type X options available cost 30% to 40% more than standard Type X without delivering meaningful weight savings.

Sound Performance Differences

Ultralight drywall transmits slightly more sound than standard drywall. The reduced density that makes the board light also makes it less effective at blocking airborne sound. The STC rating of a standard wall assembly drops by 1 to 3 points when using ultralight on both sides versus standard on both sides. For party walls between living units, sound-sensitive home offices, and bedroom-to-bathroom walls, this difference matters.

Hanging and Finishing Tips

Ultralight drywall accepts the same fasteners as standard board. Use #6 coarse-thread drywall screws at 12-inch spacing on walls and 8-inch on ceilings, the same as standard. The reduced density means screws drive slightly faster and require less torque from the driver, reducing operator fatigue on large projects.

Cutting is also easier. A standard utility knife scores the paper face and the board snaps cleanly. Edges hold better than standard drywall during cuts, with fewer fractured edges that need taping repair. Finishing requires the same three-coat compound process with the same all-purpose joint compound or premixed mud from USG, CertainTeed, or Sheetrock.

Should You Switch to Ultralight Drywall

For ceiling work, solo DIY projects, multi-story installations, and any project where moving sheets is a meaningful part of the labor, the answer is yes. The weight savings reduce fatigue, accelerate the work, and lower the risk of broken sheets and back injuries.

For impact-prone walls, sound-sensitive installations, and budget-driven jobs where every penny matters, standard drywall remains the better pick. Most homeowners benefit from a mixed approach: ultralight on ceilings, standard on walls that face high traffic, and sound-rated board on shared walls or media rooms. Ultralight drywall changes the labor equation, not the structural one, and that distinction guides where to use it.
