Urethane flooring adhesive now dominates engineered hardwood, glue-down LVT, and rubber sheet installs because it combines aggressive bond strength, moisture vapor protection, and elastomeric properties that absorb subfloor movement without releasing. Choosing the right urethane for a given install is more nuanced than the showroom rep usually explains, and using the wrong product cause delamination, ghost lines, and floor failures that show up months after the install crew has cashed the check.
What Urethane Adhesives Actually Do
Polyurethane flooring adhesives are one-part or two-part systems that cure through moisture absorption from the substrate and air. The cured polymer remains slightly flexible, which lets the bond line absorb seasonal subfloor movement without cracking. Open Time and Working Window
Most urethane adhesives offer 60 to 120 minutes of open time at 70°F and 50 percent relative humidity. Higher temperatures and higher humidity cut that window aggressively — at 85°F and 70 percent RH, open time can compress to 30 to 45 minutes. Plan job sequencing accordingly. Crews working in summer or in warm regions like Phoenix, Houston, and Atlanta should pre-stage planks and limit the area trowel ahead to one row at a time.
Working time after planks contact the adhesive is roughly half of the open time. Pull a plank up and reset within 20 to 30 minutes; beyond that the bond is committed.
Substrate Preparation
Urethane bonds aggressively to clean, properly prepared substrates. Common prep failures:
- Residual curing compounds or sealers on concrete that prevent urethane bond — diamond grinding or shot-blasting required
- Dust and loose particulate from grinding — must be HEPA-vacuumed thoroughly before adhesive application
- Subfloor flatness exceeding manufacturer specification (typically 3/16 inch in 10 feet for hardwood) — requires leveling compound before adhesive

Moisture-Mitigating Urethane — When to Spec It
Standard urethane adhesives publish maximum moisture readings (typically 4.5 lb/1000 sq ft calcium chloride or 80 percent RH per ASTM F2170). Above those numbers, the bond line will fail eventually. Moisture-mitigating urethanes like Bostik Best (rated to 12 lb/1000 sq ft and 95 percent RH) and Sika MB (rated to 95 percent RH unconditionally) carry premiums of $0.25 to $0.60 per square foot over standard products but eliminate the cost of a separate epoxy moisture-mitigation primer. For most slab-on-grade residential installs in humid climates, the moisture-mitigating urethane is the right call.
Cleanup and Skin Safety
Fresh urethane on planks and skin cleans easily with mineral spirits or manufacturer-approved adhesive remover (Bostik UltraWipe, Wonder Wipes). Cured urethane requires aggressive mechanical removal. Wear nitrile gloves during application — urethane skin contact causes irritation and sensitization with repeated exposure. Crews who skip gloves develop adhesive sensitivity within a season or two.
