Open the lid at the end of a cycle and find a tub full of gray water and soggy clothes, and you have the single most common washing machine failure I get called about. A washer machine not draining is almost always a clog, a failed pump, or a switch that never told the machine the lid was closed. The good news is that roughly seven out of ten of these problems are fixable in under an hour with basic hand tools and a shop vacuum. Before you spend $150 on a service call, work through the checks below in order.
Confirm It Is a Drain Problem, Not a Spin Problem
Standing water can mean two different failures, and telling them apart saves you an hour of chasing the wrong part. If the tub is full and the drum never spun, the machine likely tripped a fault and stopped mid-cycle. If clothes are sopping and the drum clearly spun but water still sits below the basket, you have a genuine drain blockage or a dead pump.
Run a spin-and-drain cycle by itself and stand next to the machine. Listen for a low humming that lasts 8 to 12 seconds without any water moving out the hose. That hum is the drain pump straining against a clog or running with a seized impeller. Silence during the drain phase usually points to an electrical issue, a blown lid switch, or a control board that never sent power to the pump.
Start With the Drain Hose and Standpipe
The drain hose is the first suspect because it is the easiest fix and the most common culprit. Unplug the washer, pull it a foot away from the wall, and follow the corrugated hose from the back of the machine to the standpipe or laundry sink. Feel along its length for a kink; a hose crushed behind the machine when you slid it back into place will stop drainage cold with zero mechanical failure.
Next, pull the hose out of the standpipe and aim it into a bucket set on the floor. If water gushes out under gravity, your hose is clear and the standpipe is clogged with lint and detergent scum. Standpipes should sit 30 to 36 inches above the floor, and a partial clog there causes slow draining and sink backups. Snake the standpipe with a 1/4-inch drain auger, or pour a kettle of near-boiling water down it to melt the soap and grease that binds lint into a plug.
Clean the Drain Pump Filter
Front-load washers and many newer top-loaders have a serviceable pump filter, often called a coin trap, behind a small access panel at the lower front corner of the cabinet. This trap catches socks, coins, hairpins, and bra underwires before they reach the pump, and it is the single most overlooked maintenance point in the whole machine. Manufacturers recommend cleaning it every three to four months, and almost nobody does.
Lay old towels down first, because up to a quart of trapped water will pour out. Twist the filter cap counterclockwise slowly and let the water drain into a shallow pan. You will often pull out a slimy gray wad of lint wrapped around a lost coin. Rinse the filter under hot water, clear the housing with your fingers, and thread it back in snugly. On many GE, Samsung, and LG front-loaders this fixes a stubborn drain problem outright.
Check the Drain Pump and Impeller
If the hose runs clear and the filter is clean, the pump itself is next. Access it by tipping the machine back against a wall or laying it on its front over a moving blanket, then locate the pump where the drain hose connects internally. Most drain pumps are held by two or three Torx or hex screws and a spring clamp on each hose.
Before you condemn the pump, disconnect the hoses and shine a flashlight into the impeller housing. A small object, a chip of plastic, or a wad of hair can jam the impeller so it hums but never turns. Spin the impeller by hand; it should rotate freely with light resistance. If it is seized, cracked, or the plastic vanes are worn to nubs, replace the pump. A typical drain pump runs $30 to $90 and takes about 30 minutes to swap once you have the machine open.
Test the Lid Switch or Door Lock
A top-load washer will not drain or spin if the lid switch fails, because the control board reads the lid as open and halts the cycle for safety. The switch is a small plastic actuator under the lid near the hinge; press it with the lid up and listen for a faint click. No click, or a broken tab, means the switch needs replacement, a $15 part on most models.
Front-loaders use a door lock assembly that must confirm the door is latched before any water moves. If the lock is faulty, you often see an error code and a tub of water that will not drain. You can usually force the door open with the manual release cord behind the pump filter panel, bail the water out with a cup and towels, then replace the lock mechanism.
Look for a Failed Belt or Control Board
On older direct-drain top-loaders, a snapped or slipping drive belt can leave the pump unpowered even though the timer advances normally. A quick look under the machine will show a belt hanging loose off its pulley. Belts run $10 to $25 and are a straightforward swap if you are comfortable tipping the machine.
The last and least common cause is a failed control board or timer that never energizes the pump circuit. This is where DIY diagnosis gets expensive, because a replacement board can cost $150 to $300, sometimes more than half the price of a new machine. If you have cleared the hose, filter, pump, and switches and the pump still gets no voltage during the drain cycle, it is time to weigh the repair against the age of the appliance.
Get the Standing Water Out Safely
Whatever the root cause, you need to empty the tub before you can work. Kill power at the plug or breaker first, because water and live electrical parts do not mix. Lower the drain hose below the level of the drum and let gravity siphon the water into buckets, swapping them as they fill. A wet/dry shop vacuum makes short work of the last few inches and any water that pooled in the door frame of a front-loader.
Never bail a machine that is still plugged in and still under a fault, and never reach into the drum of a top-loader that might suddenly resume spinning. Once the tub is dry, you can run your diagnostic cycles and part swaps without a mess. Bail slowly, keep towels underfoot, and mop up drips as you go so you are not troubleshooting on a wet floor.
Prevent the Next Clog
Most drain failures are cumulative, not sudden. Lint, hair, and coagulated detergent build up over months until one sock tips the balance. Clean the pump filter quarterly, run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar monthly to cut soap scum, and switch to a high-efficiency detergent dosed by the cap line rather than eyeballed. Overdosing HE detergent is the number one cause of the gummy residue that traps lint in the standpipe and filter.
Empty pockets before every load, because coins and hairpins are the objects that most often jam a pump impeller. Keep the machine level and pulled far enough from the wall that the drain hose curves gently instead of kinking. Do these five things and a washer machine not draining becomes a rare emergency instead of a recurring headache, and your machine will run its full 10-to-14-year lifespan without a premature pump failure.
Work the list top to bottom and you will resolve the vast majority of drain failures yourself. Only a genuine control-board fault or a badly seized pump truly warrants a technician, and by then you will know exactly what to tell them, which keeps the diagnostic fee off your bill.
