Most people only ever see the soft surface they walk on, but the comfort and lifespan of any carpet depend almost entirely on the hidden layers beneath it. Understanding what goes under carpet helps you avoid the two most common regrets: a floor that feels thin and hard after a year, and a seam that lifts because the installer skipped a step. From the subfloor up, there are usually four distinct layers, and each one does a specific job.
Get the stack right and a mid-grade carpet can feel like a luxury upgrade. Get it wrong and even a $6-per-square-foot plush will pack down flat. Here is everything that belongs under your carpet, in the order it gets installed.
The Subfloor: Your Foundation
The subfloor is the structural deck the entire system rests on. In most homes built after 1970, that means 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood or OSB over the floor joists. In basements and slab-on-grade homes, it is poured concrete. Before anything else goes down, the subfloor needs to be clean, dry, and flat to within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span.
Squeaks come from the subfloor, not the carpet, so drive 2-inch screws into the joists every 6 inches along any spot that creaks. Patch low areas in concrete with a self-leveling compound that costs about $35 per bag and covers roughly 30 square feet at 1/4 inch. Skipping this prep is the single biggest cause of premature wear.
Moisture Barriers and Vapor Protection
Over concrete, especially below grade, moisture is the enemy. Concrete wicks water vapor upward even when it looks bone dry. Before installing pad, tape down a 6-mil polyethylene sheet, overlapping seams by 6 inches, or choose a carpet pad with a built-in moisture barrier film on top.
Run a simple test first: tape a 2-foot square of clear plastic to the slab for 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, you have a vapor problem that needs a sealer like a two-part epoxy primer before you proceed. Trapped moisture leads to mold and that musty basement smell within months.
Carpet Padding: The Most Important Layer
Padding, also called cushion or underlay, is what determines how the carpet feels and how long it lasts. It absorbs foot traffic so the carpet fibers do not crush against the hard subfloor. The biggest mistake homeowners make is buying premium carpet and pairing it with the cheapest pad available.
For most residential rooms, look for 6 to 8 pound density rebond pad at 7/16 inch thickness, which runs about $0.50 to $0.80 per square foot. Avoid going thicker than 7/16 inch under most carpets, because too much cushion lets the backing flex and break down. Use these guidelines:
- Bedrooms and living rooms: 7/16-inch, 6 to 8 lb rebond for plush comfort
- Stairs and hallways: 3/8-inch, 8 lb or higher for stability under heavy traffic
- Basements: Rubber slab or pad with a moisture barrier
- Berber and commercial loop: Firm 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch pad only
Tack Strips Around the Perimeter
Tack strips are the thin wooden boards studded with angled nails that grip the carpet backing and hold it stretched tight. They get nailed around the entire perimeter of the room, about 1/4 to 3/8 inch from the wall, leaving a gap roughly equal to the carpet thickness so the edge can be tucked down cleanly.
On concrete, installers use masonry tack strips with hardened nails or construction adhesive. The pins always angle toward the wall so the stretched carpet stays locked in place. A correctly stretched carpet over good tack strips should show no ripples or wrinkles even after years of use.
Seam Tape and Transitions
Where two pieces of carpet meet, installers join them with heat-activated seam tape and a seaming iron heated to roughly 250 to 300°F. The adhesive melts into both backings to create a bond that is nearly invisible when done by a pro. A poorly made seam is the first thing to fail, so this is not a step to rush.
At doorways and where carpet meets tile or hardwood, a metal or wood transition strip covers the edge and protects it from fraying. These cost $8 to $20 each and come in matching finishes. They also create a safe, trip-free threshold between rooms.
Choosing the Right Pad Density and Thickness
Density and thickness are two separate specs, and people constantly confuse them. Density measures how much the foam weighs per cubic foot and is the real indicator of quality and longevity. Thickness is just how tall the pad is. A thick, low-density pad feels luxurious in the showroom but breaks down within a year, while a thinner, high-density pad supports the carpet far better over a decade.
As a rule, most carpet manufacturers require a minimum 6-pound density and a maximum 7/16-inch thickness to keep their warranty valid, so check the carpet’s spec sheet before buying pad. Going thicker than the carpet allows actually voids many warranties, because the excess flex stresses and cracks the backing. For frieze and thick plush carpets, an 8-pound, 3/8-inch pad usually delivers the best balance of comfort and support. Memory-foam and rubber pads cost more but resist permanent compression in high-traffic homes.
Specialty Pads for Specific Needs
Beyond standard rebond, several specialty pads solve particular problems. Moisture-barrier pads carry a thin film on top that blocks spills and pet accidents from reaching the subfloor, a smart choice for homes with dogs or young kids. Antimicrobial pads resist mold and odor, which matters in humid climates and below grade.
Acoustic or thermal pads add an R-value boost and help deaden sound between floors, a popular upgrade in multi-story homes and upstairs bedrooms. Expect to pay $0.15 to $0.40 per square foot more for these features. For radiant-heated subfloors, choose a low-R-value pad specifically rated for use over heat, since a thick insulating pad would trap warmth and defeat the heating system.
Putting It All Together
Now that you know what goes under carpet, the installation sequence makes sense: prep and dry the subfloor, add a moisture barrier if needed, nail down tack strips, roll out and seam the padding, then stretch the carpet over the top and tuck the edges. Each layer supports the one above it.
