At the bottom sits an optional attached underlayment pad of IXPE or EVA foam, usually 1 to 1.5 mm, that softens sound and smooths minor subfloor imperfections. Above that is the rigid stone-plastic core, the defining layer, made of calcium carbonate limestone powder blended with polyvinyl chloride and stabilizers, compressed into a board that barely flexes.
On top of the core comes a printed vinyl film that supplies the wood-look or stone-look pattern, followed by a clear wear layer and a UV-cured urethane topcoat. That wear layer, measured in mils, is the single most important spec for durability. The whole stack typically runs 4 to 8 mm thick, with the core doing the structural heavy lifting.
Why the Stone Core Matters
The limestone-heavy core is what separates SPC from flexible glue-down vinyl and even from WPC, its wood-plastic-composite cousin. Because the core is so dense and rigid, it does not expand and contract dramatically with temperature the way older vinyl did. You can install SPC in a sunroom, a three-season porch, or a cabin that swings from 50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the planks stay dimensionally stable.
That rigidity also means the floor telegraphs fewer subfloor flaws. A small trowel ridge or nail head that would eventually ghost through thin sheet vinyl gets bridged by the stiff SPC board. SPC is not flawless, and I would rather you hear the downsides now. Underfoot it feels harder and colder than WPC or hardwood because that stone core has no give, so in a bedroom or a room where you stand for long stretches, some people prefer a softer floor or add an area rug. It is comfort, not durability, that suffers.
Because the core is thin and rigid, SPC also reproduces subfloor unevenness beyond about 1/8 inch over 6 feet, so a badly out-of-flat slab still needs leveling first. And while the surface is tough, a deep gouge in the printed film cannot be sanded out the way a scratch in real wood can; a damaged plank has to be replaced. Cheaper SPC with a wear layer under 12 mils will also show traffic patterns faster than most buyers expect.
SPC Versus WPC and Laminate
Buyers constantly confuse SPC with WPC. Both are rigid-core waterproof planks, but WPC uses a wood-plastic-composite core that is lighter, thicker, warmer, and softer underfoot, while SPC’s stone core is thinner, denser, harder, and more dent- and heat-resistant. If comfort and sound absorption top your list, WPC edges ahead; if maximum durability and stability matter most, SPC wins.
Against laminate, the comparison is not close in wet areas. Laminate’s fiberboard core swells permanently when water reaches it, whereas SPC simply does not care about moisture. Laminate can feel a touch warmer and sometimes shows a crisper embossed texture, but for kitchens, baths, and basements, SPC is the safer specification nearly every time.
Buying Guide: Specs That Actually Matter
Focus on the wear layer first. For a busy household with kids and pets, insist on at least a 20-mil wear layer; 12 mil suits light residential traffic, while 6-mil promotional products belong in rentals or low-use rooms. Total plank thickness of 5 to 6.5 mm with an attached IXPE pad hits the sweet spot for feel and forgiveness over minor subfloor flaws.
Check the warranty and the embossing. A reputable manufacturer backs residential SPC for 15 to 25 years, and embossed-in-register texture, where the surface grain aligns with the printed pattern, looks dramatically more realistic than flat prints. Confirm the click system is a proven format, buy 7 to 10 percent overage, and acclimate the boxes flat in the room for 48 hours before installation.
Installing SPC Over Existing Floors
One of SPC’s biggest practical wins is how forgiving it is about what sits beneath it. A floating SPC floor can go directly over ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, plywood, or a cured concrete slab, provided the surface is flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, clean, and dry. You skip the demolition and disposal costs that a hardwood or tile install would force, which can save $1 to $3 per square foot on a renovation.
Grout lines wider than about 1/4 inch should be skim-filled first, because the rigid core can eventually flex and crack over a deep void. Over concrete below grade, run a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier under the planks unless the attached pad already includes one, since even waterproof flooring benefits from keeping slab moisture from pooling underneath. Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap at every wall and vertical obstruction, and never trap the floating floor tight under cabinets or door casings.
Long-Term Care and Realistic Lifespan
Day-to-day upkeep is genuinely minimal. Sweep or dry-vacuum grit that would otherwise abrade the topcoat, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner or plain water; skip wax, polish, and abrasive pads that dull the urethane finish. Felt pads under furniture legs and a walk-off mat at exterior doors do more to preserve the wear layer than any cleaning product.
A quality SPC floor with a 20-mil wear layer realistically lasts 15 to 25 years in a residential setting before traffic lanes start to show, and individual damaged planks pop out and replace in a floating install without disturbing the rest of the field. That repairability, combined with true waterproofing, is why I keep specifying it. Just remember direct, unshaded sunlight through a south window can fade darker prints over years, so pair large glass areas with UV-filtering blinds to protect the color.
Is SPC the Right Floor for You?
