Picking the right window screen material is the difference between a screen that lasts 15 years and one that sags, tears, or blocks half your view within two summers. Price is only part of the story — a $12 roll and a $45 roll can both be the correct answer depending on whether your enemy is mosquitoes, cat claws, Texas sun, or salt air. Standard Fiberglass: The Default for Good Reason

Fiberglass mesh in the classic 18-by-16 weave (18 strands per inch one way, 16 the other) covers probably 80 percent of American windows. It costs $10 to $15 for a 36-inch-by-84-inch roll, installs easily because it stretches slightly and never creases, and comes in charcoal or silver-gray. Charcoal is the better pick — dark mesh reduces glare, so you see through it more clearly from inside.

Expect 10 to 15 years of service before UV exposure makes the strands brittle. The material’s weaknesses are punctures and abrasion: a branch, a pet, or an errant elbow goes right through it. It also stretches permanently if something leans against it, leaving a visible belly in the panel. For ordinary windows out of reach of pets and kids, though, nothing beats its combination of price, visibility, and easy handling.

Aluminum: Stronger, but It Creases Forever

Aluminum wire mesh runs $15 to $25 per roll in bright, charcoal, or black finishes. It resists punctures and sagging far better than fiberglass and will not degrade in sunlight, which is why it was the standard before vinyl-coated fiberglass took over in the 1960s. Two caveats keep it from being the automatic choice. First, it creases: press a fingertip into it and the dent is permanent, which makes installation less forgiving and screen-handling accidents visible forever. Second, in coastal environments, bare aluminum oxidizes and pits within a few years unless you buy a coated version. Black-coated aluminum offers the best outward visibility of any metal mesh and looks sharp on historic homes. If you live near the ocean, skip aluminum entirely and read on to stainless.

Pet-Resistant Polyester: For Homes With Claws

Pet screen is vinyl-coated polyester woven roughly seven times heavier than standard fiberglass. Phifer PetScreen and Saint-Gobain ADFORS Pet-D-Fense are the two names you will see, at $20 to $30 for a 36-inch-by-84-inch roll. A 60-pound dog pawing at a patio door will not tear it, and cats climbing a window screen leave no marks. The trade-offs are a visibly heavier weave that dims the view somewhat, slightly reduced airflow, and a thicker profile that usually requires downsizing your spline one diameter to seat properly in the frame channel. Most people install it only on the bottom half of double-hung windows or on the lower door panels where animals actually make contact, keeping standard mesh up top for visibility.

Solar Screen: Cutting Heat Before It Hits the Glass

Solar screening — Phifer SunTex 80 and SunTex 90 are the benchmarks — is a dense PVC-coated polyester weave that blocks 80 to 90 percent of solar heat gain before it ever reaches the window glass. On a west-facing window in Phoenix or Dallas, that can lower the interior surface temperature of the glass by 15°F or more and meaningfully cut summer cooling bills. Airflow drops perhaps 10 percent, which matters on a screened porch you rely on for breeze but is unnoticeable on a bedroom window. If the package lists nothing but “fiberglass screen,” assume the thinner strand.

Matching Material to Your Actual Problem

Start with the failure mode you are trying to prevent rather than the price tag. Screens that keep tearing at pet level call for polyester pet mesh on the affected panels only. A living room that bakes every afternoon calls for solar screen on that exposure, not the whole house. Brittle, crumbling mesh on a 20-year-old home simply means the original fiberglass aged out — replace like with like and you are set for another 15 years at about $5 per window in material. And if you are re-screening anyway, remember that the mesh is only half the system: fresh spline in the correct diameter (typically 0.125 to 0.140 inch for windows) and a $6 steel-wheel spline roller do as much for the finished result as the fanciest mesh on the shelf.
