For a busy household with kids and pets, target 20 mil or higher regardless of overall thickness. A 12mm plank with a 12 mil wear layer is a worse long-term buy than a 6mm plank with 22 mil.

Some rooms truly reward the extra height. Concrete basement slabs that read slightly uneven benefit from the rigidity, since the plank bridges small variations the way a thinner board cannot. Upper-floor bedrooms and home offices where footstep noise travels are another natural fit, especially with an attached acoustic pad.

I also reach for thicker rigid core in spaces that swing in temperature, like a three-season porch or a garage conversion without dedicated HVAC. The denser core simply moves less. Installation Notes for Thicker Planks

Most 12mm rigid-core floors float over the subfloor with an angle-tap or drop-lock click joint, no glue or nails. Acclimate the boxes flat in the room for 48 hours so the planks reach equilibrium with the space. Leave a quarter-inch expansion gap at every wall and vertical obstruction; rigid core still moves, and pinned planks will buckle.

  1. Check subfloor flatness to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet and grind or fill as needed.
  2. Lay a moisture barrier on concrete unless the plank has an integrated backing rated for it.
  3. Stagger end joints at least 6 to 8 inches so seams don’t line up and weaken.

Match the product to the room, not to a number on the box. For most living areas, a 6mm to 8mm rigid core with a 20 mil wear layer is the sweet spot of price and performance. Step up to 12mm vinyl flooring when you need extra rigidity over an imperfect slab, want maximum sound control on an upper level, or simply prefer the substantial feel underfoot and have the door and appliance clearances to accommodate it.

Pull two or three sample planks, set them on your actual floor, and walk them in socks and shoes. Press a coin into the wear layer and drag it. The plank that feels solid, resists the scratch, and clears your transitions is the right one, whether it measures 12mm or not.

Pair a sensible core height with a serious wear layer, plan your transitions, and you’ll get a floor that looks sharp and shrugs off daily abuse.
