240 Volt Dryer Plug Types, Wiring, and Code Rules

If you have just bought a new electric dryer, the plug on the cord rarely matches the receptacle on your laundry room wall. Newer homes use a four-prong outlet, older homes use a three-prong outlet, and the dryer ships either with no cord or with the wrong configuration on purpose. Sorting out the right 240 volt dryer plug for your setup means understanding the NEC code change in 1996, the difference between 30-amp and 50-amp circuits, and which wiring colors to expect when you open the wall.

Why There Are Two Dryer Plug Types

Before 1996, the National Electrical Code allowed electric dryers and ranges to use a three-wire circuit with the neutral and ground bonded inside the appliance. That setup used NEMA 10-30 receptacles, with two hot prongs (120V each, 240V together) and one neutral that doubled as ground.

In 1996 the NEC mandated separate ground and neutral for new installations — the NEMA 14-30 receptacle. Existing three-prong outlets were grandfathered in. The result: two valid plug types coexist depending on when the home was wired.

The Two Most Common Dryer Plugs

  • NEMA 14-30: Four prongs (two hot, one neutral, one ground) — required in homes wired or remodeled after 1996
  • NEMA 10-30: Three prongs (two hot, one shared neutral/ground) — grandfathered in older homes
  • NEMA 14-50: Four prongs at 50 amps — used for some ranges and EV chargers, occasionally for high-power commercial-style dryers
  • NEMA 6-30: Three prongs, no neutral — uncommon for residential dryers, used on some commercial 240V-only equipment

For 99 percent of US homes built today, the answer is NEMA 14-30. For homes from the 1980s and earlier that have never been remodeled, expect NEMA 10-30. The dryer cord must match the receptacle, not the other way around.

Matching the Cord to Your Receptacle

Most dryers ship without a cord because manufacturers cannot know whether you have a three-prong or four-prong outlet. Buy the correct cord from any hardware store: 4-prong cords like the Whirlpool PT600L ($25 at Home Depot) or 3-prong cords like the GE WX09X10004 ($20 at Lowe’s).

Cords come in 4-foot and 6-foot lengths. The 6-foot version gives slack to pull the dryer out for cleaning, which matters because lint trap fires almost always start in a dryer pushed too tight against the wall.

Wiring a New 4-Prong Cord

  1. Unplug the dryer and turn off the breaker at the panel.
  2. Remove the access panel on the back of the dryer (typically four 1/4 inch hex screws).

  4. Connect the green ground wire from the cord to the green ground screw on the dryer chassis.
  5. Connect the white neutral wire to the center terminal.
  6. Connect the two black or black-and-red hot wires to the outer terminals.
  7. Secure the strain relief clamp around the cord at the entry point.
  8. Replace the access panel.

For a 3-prong cord install, the neutral-to-chassis bonding strap stays in place. This is the single most common mistake DIYers make when converting between cord types.

Wiring Colors You Will See

Inside a typical 30-amp dryer circuit, you will find:

  • Black: Hot leg 1 (120V to neutral)
  • Red: Hot leg 2 (120V to neutral, 240V to black)
  • White: Neutral (returns 120V loads like the drum light and timer motor)
  • Green or bare: Equipment ground

In older 3-wire installations, the cable is often 10/3 SE service-entrance cable with the bare aluminum jacket serving as both neutral and ground. Modern 4-wire installations use 10/3 with ground (10/3 W/G) NM-B cable, which has insulated black, red, and white conductors plus a bare copper ground.

Should You Upgrade From 3-Prong to 4-Prong?

The NEC allows existing 3-prong receptacles to remain in service indefinitely. There is no requirement to upgrade unless you remodel the laundry area or replace the receptacle. That said, the 4-prong system is safer because the ground and neutral are separated — a fault that energizes the dryer chassis can flow through the dedicated ground without back-feeding through the neutral.

Upgrading typically costs $200 to $450 in materials and labor: a new 10/3 cable run from the panel, a new 30A double-pole breaker, and a NEMA 14-30 receptacle. If the existing run is too short to reach the new junction box location, the price climbs.

Breakers, Wire Size, and Code

A standard residential electric dryer pulls 24 amps maximum at 240 volts, which sizes the circuit at 30 amps. The code requires 10 AWG copper conductors for that load. Anything smaller violates NEC 240.4 and creates a fire risk.

Use a 30-amp double-pole breaker like the Square D HOM230 ($14) or Eaton CHB230 ($16). Both occupy two adjacent slots in the panel. Do not put a dryer on a 50-amp breaker — the wire would overheat before the breaker tripped.

Permits, Inspections, and When to Hire a Pro

Replacing a dryer cord on an existing receptacle is straightforward and legal for homeowners in most jurisdictions. Running a new circuit from the panel typically requires an electrical permit and an inspection. Cost for a permit varies — $50 to $150 in most cities.

If you have never opened your service panel before, hire a licensed electrician for the new circuit. The dryer cord swap is a 15-minute job and a $25 part. The panel work involves live conductors and code knowledge that takes years to develop. The right move is usually to do the cord swap yourself and pay someone else to handle anything inside the panel.

Testing Your Receptacle Before Plugging In

Before plugging in a new dryer, test the receptacle with a multimeter. Set the meter to AC volts, 250V range. Touch the two hot prong slots and you should read 240V (give or take a few percent). Touch each hot to the neutral and you should read 120V on each. Touch each hot to the ground and you should also read 120V.

If any reading is significantly off, stop and call an electrician. A common problem in older homes is a loose neutral connection in the panel, which can cause 120V appliances on the dryer circuit to receive 240V and immediately burn out — the dryer drum light, the timer motor, and the controls.

Brand Compatibility and Cord Manufacturer Notes

Major dryer brands (Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG, GE) all accept the same standard NEMA 14-30 or 10-30 cords. There is no “Samsung-only” cord. Aftermarket cords from brands like Petra Industries and Smart Choice cost about the same as OEM and work identically. Buy the cord with the right amperage rating (30A for dryers) and the right number of prongs for your outlet.
