The wire gauge feeding the outlet must be 10-gauge copper minimum, and the breaker must be a double-pole 30-amp unit. Anything smaller will overheat under load and create a fire hazard. The outlet itself is physically larger, with three or four wide slots arranged in a distinct pattern that prevents you from plugging in a regular cord.

The Two Outlet Configurations

Modern US homes use one of two dryer receptacles, both rated at 30 amps and 250 volts.

Wiring a 4-Prong Dryer Outlet Correctly

This is electrician territory in most jurisdictions, and pulling a permit is required almost everywhere. That said, here is what the work actually involves so you understand what you are paying for.

  1. Shut off the main breaker and verify the panel is dead with a multimeter.
  2. Run 10/3 with-ground NM-B cable (3 conductors plus ground) from the panel to the outlet location.
  3. At the outlet box, connect the bare copper to the green ground screw, the white wire to the silver neutral terminal, and the two hot wires (black and red) to the brass terminals.
  4. At the panel, connect the bare copper to the ground bar, the white wire to the neutral bar, and the two hots to a new 30-amp double-pole breaker.
  5. Restore power, test the outlet with a multimeter — you should read 240 volts between the two hot slots and 120 volts between either hot and the neutral.

The neutral and ground bars in the panel must be on separate buses if your service has a sub-panel. Bonding them in the wrong location creates a parallel return path that violates code.

Outlet Placement Rules

NEC and most local codes specify the dryer outlet height and location for both safety and accessibility:

  • Mounted between 6 and 42 inches above the finished floor
  • Behind or beside the appliance, never above
  • At least 6 inches from any water source like a utility sink or washing machine connection
  • Accessible without moving the dryer (some jurisdictions; check locally)

Stackable washer-dryer combos and laundry closets have additional clearance requirements that vary by manufacturer. Always check the appliance specs before finalizing outlet placement.

Common Problems With Dryer Outlets
