Dryer Outlet Height: The Right Position for Code and Convenience

Installing a dryer outlet at the wrong height creates two problems most homeowners discover too late. First, the dryer cord either bends sharply or won’t reach. Second, an inspector may require it moved. The correct dryer outlet height isn’t dictated by a single NEC rule but by a combination of accessibility code, dryer manufacturer specs, and the practical reality of plugging in a 100-pound appliance against a wall. The most common installation height for a 240-volt dryer outlet is 42 to 48 inches above the finished floor, centered behind where the dryer will sit. This places the outlet above the back of most full-size dryers (which average 36 to 42 inches tall) and lets the cord exit cleanly without bending into a tight loop.

Some installers prefer 18 inches off the floor — the same height as standard convenience outlets. This works for dryers but forces the cord into a sharp turn behind the unit, which strains the plug over years of use. The higher position is more practical.

NEC Code Minimums

The National Electrical Code (NEC) doesn’t specify a hard minimum height for dryer outlets in residential settings. The 15-inch rule for general convenience outlets doesn’t strictly apply to appliance receptacles. What matters is that the receptacle is accessible — meaning you can plug and unplug without dismantling the room.

Some local jurisdictions add their own rules. Check your city’s amendments to the NEC before final placement. Common local rules include: at least 6 inches above the baseboard, behind the appliance but accessible by pulling the unit forward, and within 6 ft of the dryer plug location.

Electric Dryer vs Gas Dryer Outlet Differences

Electric dryers need a 240-volt, 30-amp dedicated circuit with a NEMA 14-30 receptacle (four-prong, used on installs after 1996). The outlet is mounted at 42 to 48 inches height as described above.

Gas dryers use a standard 120-volt 15-amp circuit for the motor and controls. The outlet for a gas dryer can be mounted at any height that’s accessible. Most installers use the standard 12-inch height for the 120V outlet plus mount the gas shutoff valve at the same height nearby.

Stacking Washer and Dryer Towers

Stackable units change the height calculation. A stacked LG or Samsung unit has the dryer at roughly 38 to 80 inches off the floor — the outlet should be mounted high, around 75 to 80 inches, to clear the back panel of the upper dryer.

Confirm with the specific model’s installation guide. Some stacked units route the cord down to a lower outlet, while others require the outlet to be near the dryer’s back panel. Mounting the outlet too low for a stacked unit leaves you fighting with a tightly bent cord every time the unit is serviced.

The 6-Foot Cord Rule

Standard dryer cords are 4, 5, or 6 ft long. Most homeowners install 6 ft cords. The receptacle must be within 6 ft of the dryer plug location measured along the path the cord actually takes (not straight-line distance).

If your laundry room layout requires more reach, consider relocating the receptacle rather than extending the cord with an adapter. NEC prohibits the use of extension cords for dryers, and home insurance frequently disqualifies fire claims from cord modifications.

Pedestal Installations

Front-load washers and dryers on 12 to 15 inch storage pedestals raise the unit higher off the floor. Adjust your outlet height accordingly — typically 54 to 60 inches with pedestals to clear the back of the elevated unit.

Add the pedestal height to your standard 42-inch mark. So if you’re using a 15-inch pedestal, install the outlet at 57 inches. Pedestals from Whirlpool, GE, and LG all run between 12 and 15 inches.

Receptacle Type Requirements

For installations after 1996, the four-prong NEMA 14-30 receptacle is required on all new construction. Older homes with three-prong NEMA 10-30 outlets are legal to keep as-is, but cannot be replaced or modified into a four-prong outlet without also pulling a new ground wire — which usually means a fresh circuit from the panel.

The NEMA 14-30 has hot, hot, neutral, and ground separated. The older NEMA 10-30 lacks a separate ground (used the neutral as ground). When upgrading, always pull new 10/3 with ground Romex back to the panel. Cost runs $200 to $400 in materials and labor.

Box and Wiring Specifics

Use a metal 4-inch square outlet box (deeper than standard 2×4) to accommodate the heavier 10-gauge wire. Carlon B232A or Raco 232 boxes work well. The box should be flush with the finished drywall surface, not recessed.

10-gauge Romex (10/3 with ground) is the correct wire for 30-amp dryer circuits. Stranded conductors are easier to land on the receptacle screws. Use anti-oxidation paste on aluminum wire if your home has any (rare on dryer circuits but possible on 1960s-70s wiring).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Watch out for these errors:

  • Mounting the outlet directly behind the dryer’s exhaust port — the heat damages the receptacle over time
  • Using 12-gauge wire on a 30-amp breaker (must be 10-gauge minimum)
  • Installing a three-prong outlet on new construction
  • Forgetting to support 10-gauge Romex with staples every 4.5 ft
  • Skipping the dedicated circuit — a dryer cannot share a circuit with anything else

The exhaust port issue is the most overlooked. Position the outlet at least 12 inches from the dryer vent connection, ideally to one side rather than directly above.

Permits and Inspection

Adding or relocating a 240V dryer outlet always requires a permit in most jurisdictions. Permits run $40 to $120. The inspection happens after the wall is open but before drywall is closed up. Bring the panel labeling current and have the breaker, wire gauge, and receptacle type ready for the inspector to verify.

Don’t drywall over a circuit until it’s been inspected. Failure to do so means cutting out the patch and redoing it, costing far more than the permit ever would.
