Base Prep: Where Big Squares Live or Die

Never spot-bed big slabs on mortar dabs or five blobs of sand — the unsupported spans between dabs are precisely where they crack. Full, uniform bedding contact or nothing.
Joint Spacing and Edge Restraint
Big squares read best — and perform best — with deliberate joints. Tight-set 1/8-to-1/4-inch joints filled with polymeric sand give a monolithic modern surface; the polymeric sand matters more here than with small pavers because there are fewer joints total, and each one carries more of the interlock duty. The signature contemporary alternative is the open joint: slabs spaced 1 to 4 inches apart with turf, creeping thyme, or 3/8-inch basalt gravel between — forgiving of minor size variation and it stretches your paver count. Keep gravel joints at least 2 inches wide so they rake clean. Whatever the joint, restrain the field: paver edging spiked into the base, or a concrete toe, on every unmortared edge. A field of 100-pound slabs still walks over freeze-thaw cycles without restraint.
Modern Layouts That Suit the Format
The grid is the point of this size, so lean into it. A simple stacked-bond grid with aligned joints is the cleanest contemporary look and the easiest to lay accurately off two string lines. Placement Technique for Heavy Slabs
Set each slab down flat, never corner-first — a corner landing on screeded bedding digs a divot that rocks the slab forever. Two people lower it by the clamp or by opposite edges, snug against spacers, then check with a torpedo level both directions. Adjustment means lifting the slab back out and re-screeding, not banging a 95-pound slab with a mallet; big formats accept only gentle rubber-mallet persuasion at the edges. Do not run a plate compactor over bare large-format slabs — they crack. Compact only with a roller attachment or a protective pad, or hand-set and skip vibration entirely with chip-stone bedding. Work off the laid field, not the screeded bedding, and screed only as far ahead as you will place that session.
Cutting 24×24 Slabs Without Ruining Them
Sooner or later the layout meets a wall, a post, or a curve, and big slabs punish improvised cutting. A 14-inch gas cut-off saw or a rented walk-behind wet saw with a diamond blade ($60 to $110 per day) makes clean full-depth cuts; a 7.25-inch circular saw with a diamond blade works in a pinch by scoring 1 inch deep on both faces and snapping over a pipe, but expect a rougher edge. Always cut wet or with a dust shroud and vacuum — dry-cutting concrete releases silica dust, and OSHA-level exposure happens fast at this material volume, so wear a P100 respirator regardless. Mark cuts with a lumber crayon and a straightedge, support both sides of the cut so the waste piece cannot pinch the blade, and plan the layout to hide cut edges against the house or under the border course. L-shaped notches around posts are two straight cuts plus a light tap — never try to nibble a notch with repeated shallow passes, which spalls the face. Fixing a Rocking or Settled Slab Later
Even good installs shift eventually, and the repair is mercifully contained with slotted-in big squares. A rocking slab means a high spot or a washed-out low spot underneath: lift the slab with a pry bar and wood block (or two suction lifters on smooth finishes), screed the bedding flat again — adding chip stone to hollows, shaving humps — and reset. Total time per slab is 15 minutes, which is the maintenance argument for this format over poured concrete: a settled corner of a monolithic patio is a mudjacking bill, while a settled paver is a Saturday-morning touch-up. Re-sand polymeric joints after any lift, and re-activate the surrounding joints with a light misting. If a whole edge row settles, the culprit is usually water — check that downspouts discharge past the patio and that the edge restraint has not let bedding migrate, then rebuild that strip’s base before resetting.
