A surprising number of US homes built before 1996 still have a three-wire 240-volt range circuit, and that is technically fine under grandfather clauses, but every new stove ships configured for a four-wire connection. Get that strap wrong and the stove case can become energized during a neutral fault.

Why Three-Wire Circuits Exist
Before the 1996 National Electrical Code update, ranges and dryers were allowed to use the neutral conductor as both the return path and the equipment ground. The thinking was that the appliance frame was large and well-bonded internally, and a separate ground was unnecessary.
The 1996 NEC update required a four-wire connection (two hots, neutral, and a separate equipment ground) for all new installations. Existing three-wire circuits remain legal in residential homes as long as the conductor is unbroken from panel to receptacle and uses an SE cable or properly sized conductors. You cannot extend a three-wire branch circuit; any new work must convert to four-wire.
The Three Conductors and Their Roles
A three-wire range circuit uses three insulated conductors plus, in some installations, the bare aluminum sheath of SE cable as part of the neutral path. The conductors and their colors:
- Hot 1 (L1): typically black, carries 120 V to ground
- Hot 2 (L2): typically red, carries 120 V to ground but 180 degrees out of phase, giving 240 V between L1 and L2
- Neutral/ground combo: typically white (or bare strands in SE cable), acts as both grounded conductor and equipment ground
The breaker is a 240-volt double-pole rated 40 amps for ranges up to 12 kW, or 50 amps for larger units. Wire gauge is typically 8 AWG copper for 40-amp circuits or 6 AWG copper for 50-amp circuits.
Receptacle Configurations
Two receptacle types are common in legacy three-wire installations. The NEMA 10-50R has three slots in an inverted-Y pattern and is rated 50 amps. The NEMA 10-30R is similar but rated 30 amps and is more often used for older dryers; ranges almost always get the 10-50R.
If your receptacle is a four-prong NEMA 14-50R (rectangular with a half-moon ground), your circuit is already four-wire and this article does not apply. Switch to a standard four-wire connection diagram in the stove’s installation manual.
Reading the Stove’s Terminal Block
Behind the lower access panel of every electric range is a terminal block with three or four screw lugs. On most ranges (Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Samsung), the block reads, from left to right: L1, neutral, L2. Newer four-wire-ready ranges add a fourth lug for the equipment ground.
A factory-installed bonding strap (a metal jumper, often green or marked with a green sticker) connects the neutral lug to the metal chassis. This strap is the critical safety component for three-wire installations. The same strap is removed when wiring for four-wire.
Step-by-Step Three-Wire Connection
With the breaker off and verified dead with a non-contact tester:
- Remove the rear access panel on the stove (usually four to six 1/4-inch hex-head screws)
- Locate the terminal block and confirm the bonding strap is in place between the neutral lug and the chassis screw
- Pull the appliance cord (NEMA 10-50P plug) through the strain relief on the back of the stove
- Connect the black wire to L1, the red wire to L2, and the white wire to the center neutral lug
- Torque each terminal to the spec on the inside of the access panel, typically 20 in-lbs
- Tighten the strain relief so the cord cannot move within the chassis
- Replace the access panel before plugging in
Plug the stove into the wall receptacle, restore power at the breaker, and verify operation by setting a burner on high. The unit should reach a low simmer in 60 to 90 seconds.
Selecting the Right Cord
Ranges in the US do not ship with a power cord; you buy it separately. For a three-wire installation, choose a 50-amp NEMA 10-50P cord rated for 125/250 V and AWG 6/3 (typically labeled “Range Cord, 4 ft, 50A”). Brands include Petra, Certified Appliance Accessories, and Whirlpool W10277748.
Expect to pay 20 to 35 dollars at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or appliance dealers. Verify the cord length matches your installation; 4-foot cords are standard, 6-foot versions exist for harder access. Never adapt a four-wire cord to a three-wire receptacle by cutting off the ground; that is a code violation and a real shock hazard.
When to Upgrade to Four-Wire
If you are remodeling the kitchen, replacing the panel, or running a new circuit, upgrade to four-wire. The cost difference is small (typically 30 to 80 dollars in cable plus an hour of labor) and the safety improvement is meaningful. Pull a new 6/3 NM-B cable with separate ground, install a NEMA 14-50R receptacle, and remove the bonding strap on the new stove before connecting.
Many electricians charge 200 to 450 dollars for the conversion plus the cost of any drywall repair needed to fish the cable. In a finished home with no attic or basement access, the disruption can be significant, which is why the grandfather clause exists.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If the stove powers on but the digital clock flickers, you have a loose neutral connection. Tighten the neutral lug at both the stove and the panel. If only half the cooktop works, one of the two hots is broken; check breaker, wire, and terminal connections on L1 and L2.
If you feel a tingle when touching the stove case, stop using it immediately. Either the bonding strap is missing, the neutral has opened somewhere in the run, or the receptacle has been wired incorrectly. Verify the strap, then test the receptacle with a multimeter for proper voltage between L1-L2 (240 V), L1-neutral (120 V), and L2-neutral (120 V). If any voltage is off, call a licensed electrician before re-energizing.
