A toilet that runs intermittently or flushes weakly almost always has the same root cause: the float is set too high or too low. Adjusting toilet float is one of the simplest plumbing repairs you can do, costs nothing in parts most of the time, and stops the slow drip of money down the drain that an oversized fill can cause. The procedure varies depending on whether your toilet has a traditional ball-and-arm float, a modern cup float, or one of the newer Fluidmaster 400-series fill valves, but all three follow the same basic principles.
Why the Float Setting Matters
The float controls one thing: how much water sits in the tank between flushes. Too high and water spills over the overflow tube continuously, costing you 1,000 to 4,000 gallons a month depending on how bad the overflow is. Too low and the tank does not store enough volume to flush waste in a single push, leading to double flushes that waste more water than the overflow ever would.
The correct water level is marked on the inside of every modern tank as a horizontal etched line, usually about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. Most toilets manufactured after 1995 are designed around a 1.6 gallon flush, and the tank holds exactly that volume when the float is set correctly.
Ball-and-Arm Float Adjustment
The classic copper or plastic ball on a horizontal arm is still common in toilets built before about 2005. To adjust it, look for an adjustment screw at the top of the fill valve where the arm attaches. A clockwise turn lowers the water level, a counterclockwise turn raises it. Make a quarter-turn at a time, flush, and check where the water settles.
Older valves without an adjustment screw require bending the brass arm itself. Bend down to lower the level and up to raise it. Bend gently with two hands supporting the arm on either side of the bend — too much force snaps the linkage and you are buying a new fill valve. Aim for the water to rest about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube.
Cup Float Adjustment (Fluidmaster 400A)
The Fluidmaster 400A and its variants dominate the modern toilet market. Instead of a horizontal ball, a cylindrical cup slides up and down a central shaft and includes an integrated adjustment clip. To lower the water level, pinch the metal clip on the side of the cup and slide the cup down the shaft. To raise it, slide the cup up. Each 1/4 inch of cup movement changes the water level about 1/2 inch.
Some newer Fluidmaster models like the 400H-002 use an adjustment screw on the top of the valve instead of a sliding clip. Rotate the screw clockwise to lower the water level. After any adjustment, flush twice and wait for the tank to settle to confirm the new level is stable.
Korky and Other Aftermarket Floats
The Korky 528 fill valve uses a thumbwheel adjustment at the top, which is the easiest mechanism in the industry to use. Turn the wheel clockwise to lower the water and counterclockwise to raise. Each full rotation changes the level about 1/4 inch. The valve also includes a quick-disconnect cap for easy interior cleaning, which is a feature worth the $15 cost when you replace an old fill valve anyway.
Generic store-brand fill valves often mimic the Fluidmaster design with a sliding cup. The adjustment mechanism should be obvious if you look carefully — either a clip you pinch or a screw you turn. If you cannot identify the adjustment, the brand name is usually printed on the top cap and a quick search for the model number turns up the manufacturer instructions.
Diagnosing the Problem Before You Adjust
Before reaching into the tank, identify the actual symptom. A toilet that runs continuously usually has the float set too high so water keeps spilling into the overflow. A toilet that runs intermittently every 15 to 30 minutes typically has a bad flapper, not a float problem. Drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank and wait 20 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking, not the fill valve.
A weak flush that needs a second push usually means the float is set too low and there is not enough water volume to push waste through the trapway. Raising the float 1/2 inch usually solves it. If raising the float does not help, the flush valve seal may be partially blocked or the toilet may need a complete rebuild kit at about $20.
Step-by-Step Adjustment Procedure
- Remove the tank lid and set it gently on a folded towel
- Identify the float type — ball-and-arm, cup, or thumbwheel
- Note the current water level relative to the etched line or overflow tube
- Make a small adjustment in the appropriate direction
- Flush the toilet and wait 60 seconds for the tank to fully refill
- Check the new water level — it should rest about 1 inch below the overflow tube top
- Repeat steps 4 through 6 until the level is correct
- Replace the tank lid and confirm no water is entering the overflow tube
The whole process takes about five minutes if the parts are working correctly. If you make adjustments and the level still drifts up to the overflow or the toilet still runs, the fill valve itself is worn and needs replacement. When the Float Is Not the Real Problem
About 30 percent of running toilets are actually flapper problems disguised as float problems. The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank, and it hardens and warps over time. A $4 universal flapper from Korky or Fluidmaster fixes most of these cases. Brackish water and high chlorine areas eat flappers faster — expect 4 to 6 years of life rather than the typical 10.
The other 5 percent are pressure regulator issues, where municipal water pressure spikes overnight and pushes water past a marginal seal. If you suspect that, check your house pressure with a $15 gauge at any outdoor spigot. Anything above 80 psi is too high and a pressure-reducing valve at the main line is the long-term fix.
