When a hospital in Birmingham needs a corridor that cannot be slipped on by a 280-pound porter wheeling a wet gurney, architects reach for Altro. Altro vinyl flooring is a British-made commercial sheet vinyl line famous for embedded aluminum oxide and silicon carbide granules that give it slip ratings other brands cannot touch. It is specified in UK hospitals, pubs, schools, and ferries, and has crossed into U.S. kitchens, labs, and wet rooms over the past decade.
Who Altro Is and What They Make
Altro Ltd. has made safety flooring since 1947 out of Letchworth, England. Their U.S. distribution expanded sharply after OSHA and ADA citations pushed kitchen and healthcare operators toward R10 and R11 slip-rated floors. The product line includes Altro Walkway, Altro XpressLay loose-lay, Altro Stronghold 30 for commercial kitchens, Altro Aquarius for wet rooms, and Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding.
Every Altro floor is homogeneous or multilayer PVC with full-depth grit impregnation. That means the slip resistance does not wear off after five years the way a surface-applied anti-slip coating does. The abrasive particles run all the way through the wear layer.
Altro Stronghold 30
Stronghold 30 is the flagship commercial kitchen product. The “30” refers to the pendulum test value (PTV) in wet barefoot and shod conditions, a number the UK’s HSE considers high-risk slip-safe. It is 3 mm thick with a 2 mm wear layer and a 10-year commercial warranty. Pricing runs $7 to $10 per square foot material, plus $4 to $7 installed.
Stronghold handles standing water, grease, and oil in a commercial kitchen line. Heat-welded seams and integral 4-inch cove base at the wall turn the floor into a seamless sanitary basin. McDonald’s, Subway, and NHS hospital kitchens across Europe use it as standard spec.
Altro Aquarius
Aquarius is engineered for barefoot wet areas: pool changing rooms, locker rooms, communal showers, and hydrotherapy suites. It carries a PTV of 50 in barefoot-wet testing, meaning genuinely slip-resistant when wet and walked on shoeless. Thickness is 2 mm with a quartz aggregate giving soft texture underfoot, unlike the coarser Stronghold.
Aquarius costs $6 to $9 per square foot material. It bonds with a two-part polyurethane adhesive and uses hot-air-welded seams. Expect a 10-year warranty and an R11 slip rating.
Altro Walkway 20
Walkway 20 is the general-purpose commercial safety vinyl. At 2 mm thick with a 10-year warranty, it fits schools, retail, offices, healthcare corridors, and airport terminals. PTV sits at 36 wet-shod. Pricing runs $5 to $8 per square foot. It comes in 40-plus colors, including wood-look and concrete-look patterns.
If you do not need the extreme slip resistance of Stronghold, Walkway 20 is the more cost-effective spec for general traffic areas.
Altro XpressLay
XpressLay is a loose-lay version designed for fast installs with zero adhesive. It uses a weighted backing with a textured base grip and installs in half the time of glue-down. Useful for pop-up retail, temporary medical facilities, and occupied renovations where off-gassing adhesives are a no-go. It is about 10 to 15 percent more expensive than glue-down Walkway.
Pros of Altro
- Industry-leading slip resistance, tested to UK HSE pendulum standards
- Aggregate is homogeneous through the wear layer, no surface wear-off
- 10- to 15-year commercial warranties standard
- Heat-welded seams create sanitary, watertight assemblies
- Compatible with integrated coved skirting for healthcare and food service
- Low VOC, FloorScore certified
Cons and Trade-Offs
- Textured surface collects food and dirt, demanding a brush autoscrubber for cleaning
- More expensive than standard commercial sheet vinyl by 20 to 40 percent
- Limited residential installer familiarity in the U.S.
- Hard underfoot versus cushioned vinyl or rubber for long-stand workers
- Welding rod colors may telegraph slightly over time
Installation Realities
Altro floors require an Altro-certified installer for the warranty to stand. The sheet is delivered in 2-meter-wide rolls (roughly 6.5 feet), seams are cut with an automatic seam cutter, and welding uses a 4 mm rod at 380 to 400 degrees F in a Leister hot-air gun. Skim the subfloor with a moisture-tolerant underlayment to an SR1 (3 mm in 3 meters) flatness standard or telegraphing will show.
Let the material acclimate at 64 to 78 degrees F for 24 hours minimum. Adhesive is a two-part polyurethane like Altro’s AltroFix W157; open times are short, so crews work in small sections.
Care and Cleaning
Daily sweep or dust mop plus a damp mop with pH-neutral cleaner. Weekly deep clean with a cylindrical brush autoscrubber and Altro Clean 44 at 1:20 dilution. Never use wax, polish, or spray buff; the grit does the work and coatings hide it. Expect 15 to 20 years of service life in heavy commercial use.
How Altro Compares to Other Commercial Brands
Against Tarkett iQ Optima, Altro generally offers better slip resistance but firmer underfoot feel. Against Forbo Surestep, the two are direct competitors at similar price points; Altro is more widely available in the U.S. through commercial flooring distributors. Against Mannington BioSpec, Altro’s grit-throughout construction outlasts surface-applied anti-slip on Mannington in heavy wet conditions.
For pricing, expect Altro to run 10 to 25 percent higher than basic commercial sheet vinyl but 30 to 50 percent less than premium rubber flooring like Nora. The middle ground often makes sense for hospitals, schools, and restaurants where slip exposure carries litigation risk but rubber’s price tag is hard to justify.
Should You Spec Altro?
If the project involves wet conditions, heavy liability exposure, or food service, altro vinyl flooring is often the lowest total-cost-of-ownership pick despite the higher sticker. For dry office or retail, there are cheaper options that perform adequately. Match the product (Walkway, Stronghold, Aquarius, XpressLay) to the specific slip, traffic, and hygiene demands of the space rather than defaulting to the top-tier SKU.
