The line between trim work and floor work blurs in every renovation, and the decisions you make about baseboards directly affect how the finished floor looks and performs. Baseboard flooring refers to the relationship between baseboard trim and the floor surface — how they meet, what gap they hide, and the order of operations that produces a clean, professional finish. Done right, the transition between floor and wall reads as one continuous design element. Done wrong, the result is uneven gaps, exposed expansion joints, or paint bleed onto a new $8 per sq ft hardwood floor that takes hours to fix.
The Order of Operations Debate
Contractors disagree on whether to install baseboards before or after the flooring, and both approaches have valid use cases. Installing baseboards first (the traditional approach) works well with carpet, where the carpet edge tucks behind the baseboard and gets concealed by the bottom edge. It also simplifies painting because the baseboards can be primed and painted before the floor is at risk of drips.
Installing flooring first (now the more common professional approach) lets the floor run continuously under the baseboard, which hides expansion gaps on floating LVP and laminate installs and produces a cleaner aesthetic with hardwood. The tradeoff is more careful painting of baseboards after install and more risk of damage to the new floor during trim work.

Shoe molding is asymmetric (typically 7/16 inch wide by 11/16 inch tall) and reads more as a subtle finishing detail than a separate trim element.
Modern minimalist designs increasingly omit shoe molding entirely, using a flush-cut baseboard with caulked floor joint instead. This look requires the floor to be set tight to the baseboard with no expansion gap, which limits material choice to glue-down or nail-down installations. Floating floors cannot be installed this way without long-term gapping problems.

Install the new floor next, leaving the manufacturer-specified expansion gap at every wall. Reinstall baseboards on top of the new floor, holding them 1/16 inch above the floor surface using a piece of cardboard as a spacer to prevent floor damage from compression. Install shoe molding last, nailing it through the baseboard into the wall plate — never down into the floor, which prevents the floor from moving seasonally under the trim.
Painting Sequence That Saves Time
Paint the baseboards twice before reinstalling — once for primer and once for the first coat of finish — while they are still loose on sawhorses. After installation, caulk the top edge where baseboard meets drywall, fill any nail holes, and apply a final coat with a high-quality brush. Painting baseboards in place is significantly slower and produces more cleanup, especially on dark hardwood floors that show drip marks. Nailing the shoe molding down into the floor instead of into the baseboard is the most common error and the most expensive to fix. When the floor expands and contracts seasonally, it carries the shoe molding with it, ripping the molding free of the baseboard and exposing the expansion gap. Always shoot finish nails at a slight upward angle into the baseboard and wall plate.
The second mistake is over-caulking the floor joint. A bead of caulk between the baseboard and the floor prevents the floor from moving and creates compression damage at the plank edges. Leave the joint between baseboard and floor uncaulked or use a flexible color-matched caulk only in bathrooms and kitchens where water intrusion is a concern.
