One of the most common questions in flooring renovations comes from homeowners staring at outdated ceramic tile they’d love to cover without the demolition cost of ripping it out. Can you lay LVP over tile? Yes, in most cases — but the answer comes with a list of conditions that, if ignored, lead to wavy floors, visible grout line bumps, and click joints that pop apart within months.
This guide covers when laying LVP directly over tile is the right call, when it’s not, and the prep work that separates a smooth long-lasting install from a frustrating do-over.
The Short Answer
LVP can go directly over ceramic, porcelain, slate, and natural stone tile as long as four conditions are met:
- The tile is firmly bonded — no loose, hollow-sounding, or cracked tiles
- The grout lines are 1/4 inch wide or less and 1/8 inch deep or less
- The floor is flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span
- The total finished floor height won’t interfere with doors, transitions, or appliances
If any of these conditions fails, you’re looking at additional prep work — or in some cases, a full tile removal.
Why Tile Makes a Decent Subfloor
Tile is rigid, stable, and waterproof — three qualities a subfloor needs. Unlike wood subfloors that flex with humidity, ceramic and porcelain stay dimensionally consistent. That stability translates into LVP click joints staying together longer.
The downside: tile surfaces have grout lines, and click-lock LVP can flex into those lines over time, creating visible depressions across the new floor. This is the single biggest issue when laying LVP over tile, and it has a simple fix.
Dealing With Grout Lines
Three approaches handle grout lines, ranked from cheapest to most thorough:
Option 1: Skim Coat the Grout
Fill the grout lines with a self-leveling patch like Henry 547 Universal Patch or Custom Building Products LevelLite. Apply a thin skim coat across the entire floor with a flat trowel, working the compound into the grout joints. Let it cure 24 hours, then sand high spots flat. Total cost for a 10×10 bathroom: $40–$80.
Option 2: Install an Underlayment
A 3mm to 5mm closed-cell foam or cork underlayment over the tile evens out grout lines and adds cushion. MP Global QuietWalk Plus ($0.45 per sq ft) and Roberts Super Felt ($0.50 per sq ft) both work. Easy to install — roll out, butt seams, tape edges.
Option 3: Full Self-Leveling Pour
For severely uneven floors or wide grout lines, pour a 1/4 inch layer of self-leveling underlayment across the entire tile surface. Mapei Novoplan 2 Plus ($45 per bag) covers about 30 sq ft at 1/4 inch. More work, but yields a glass-flat result.
Checking the Tile Is Sound
Before any prep, walk every square foot of the floor and tap each tile with a wooden spoon handle. A solid tile sounds dull and tight. A loose tile sounds hollow — like tapping an empty jar. Mark loose tiles with painter’s tape.
Loose tiles must be re-bonded or removed before LVP goes down. Re-bonding involves injecting thinset or epoxy through small drilled holes. Removal means chiseling out the loose tile and filling the void with patch compound to floor level.
Cracked tiles need similar treatment. A crack today becomes a flex point under LVP that telegraphs through to the finished surface.
Floor Height Considerations
LVP adds 4–7 mm of thickness depending on the product. Stack that on top of existing tile (which is typically 8–12 mm thick on top of mortar) and your finished floor sits 12–19 mm higher than the original subfloor.
Check these clearances before committing:
- Doors — interior doors typically have 1/2 inch clearance to the original floor. Raising the floor 1/2 inch means doors will need trimming
- Appliances — dishwashers, especially, become hard to remove for service when the floor traps them in
- Transitions — adjacent rooms with different floor heights may need transition strips
- Toilets — flange height becomes critical; adding floor height around a toilet can require flange extenders
When NOT to Lay LVP Over Tile
Skip the cover-up and remove the tile if any of these apply:
- The tile is laid over a wood subfloor that’s bouncy or springy underfoot
- More than 10 percent of tiles are loose or cracked
- The floor has multiple cracked tiles in a line (suggests subfloor movement)
- The grout lines are wider than 1/4 inch (common with rustic slate and travertine)
- The finished floor height will create unsolvable transitions to adjacent rooms
- The tile contains visible asbestos (vintage 9×9 tiles often do — test before disturbing)
Step-by-Step Installation
- Walk the floor, mark loose or cracked tiles, repair them
- Clean the surface thoroughly — vacuum, then wipe with a damp microfiber to remove residue
- Check flatness with a 6-foot straightedge — note any low spots over 3/16 inch
- Apply skim coat or self-leveler to fill grout lines and low spots
- Let the patch cure fully — usually 24 hours, longer for thick pours
- Sand any high spots flat with a pole sander and 60-grit paper
- Vacuum and tack-cloth the surface
- Roll out underlayment if using; butt seams without overlapping
- Install LVP starting from the longest wall, maintaining a 1/4 inch expansion gap around the perimeter
- Cut planks with a utility knife — score and snap
- Reinstall baseboards or add quarter-round to cover the expansion gap
What About Heated Floors?
If the existing tile sits over an electric or hydronic radiant heating system, LVP can still go over it — but check the manufacturer’s temperature rating. Most LVP tolerates surface temperatures up to 85°F. Beyond that, the wear layer can soften and the planks can dimensionally shift. Lower the thermostat setting accordingly.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping the tap test for loose tiles
- Trying to install LVP over cracked tile without patching the underlying cause
- Using thick (8mm+) underlayment, which makes the floor too soft and stresses click joints
- Forgetting the expansion gap, which causes planks to buckle in summer humidity
- Installing LVP cold — let planks acclimate in the room for 48 hours first
